Sr. Software Engineer--M365 Deployment Team

Overview We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join our team building and modernizing the large-scale deployment platform that powers mission-critical Microsoft 365 services.

Our team is transforming how software changes are deployed and operated at cloud scale. Beyond improving deployment agility, reliability, and operational efficiency, we are reimagining the deployment platform for an AI-native future , evolving from systems primarily designed for human operators into a platform where humans and AI agents are both first-class participants .

As a Senior Software Engineer, you will design, build, and operate highly reliable distributed systems that enable services to deploy changes safely and rapidly at massive scale. You will apply AI and agent technologies to automate complex engineering and operational workflows, while helping evolve the underlying platform so that agents can reason, act, collaborate, and safely operate deployment workflows alongside engineers.

This is a highly hands-on engineering role where you will own significant technical areas end-to-end and drive measurable improvements to the agility, reliability, and automation of Microsoft cloud services.

Responsibilities

• Design, implement, test, and operate reliable, scalable, and maintainable services for large-scale cloud deployment and engineering systems.
• Own significant features and technical areas end-to-end, from architecture and implementation through production rollout and Live Site support.
• Help redesign deployment capabilities for both humans and AI agents as first-class participants, including APIs, automation interfaces, observability, and appropriate safety mechanisms.
• Apply AI and agent technologies as a core engineering approach to automate deployment, validation, troubleshooting, mitigation, and other operational workflows.
• Build systems that enable AI agents to safely interact with deployment infrastructure, reason over operational signals, execute actions, and collaborate with humans or other agents.
• Diagnose complex distributed-system and production issues, identify systemic root causes, and implement durable engineering solutions.
• Use metrics, telemetry, and data to continuously improve deployment velocity, reliability, quality, and engineering effectiveness.
• Collaborate across teams to understand dependencies, define interfaces, and deliver solutions spanning multiple services and technologies.
• Drive high engineering standards through design reviews, code reviews, testing, security, observability, and operational readiness.

Qualifications Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR equivalent experience.

Other Requirements Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

• Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

• OR Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python

• OR equivalent experience.

• Solid understanding of data structures, algorithms, software architecture, and engineering fundamentals.

• Experience designing, developing, and operating distributed systems, cloud services, or large-scale backend platforms.

• Solid debugging and problem-solving skills, including diagnosing complex production issues across system boundaries.

• Demonstrated ability to independently drive significant technical projects from design through implementation and production.

• Experience using or building with AI/LLM and agent technologies, or demonstrated ability to rapidly apply these technologies to real-world engineering problems.

• Ability to think beyond traditional human-driven workflows and design systems and interfaces that can be safely consumed and operated by both humans and autonomous agents.

• Solid communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across engineering teams.
