What they need

Staff Accountant / Full-Charge Bookkeeper

About the Position

Epic Private Wealth is seeking an experienced Staff Accountant / Full-Charge Bookkeeper to join our Accounting team in Phoenix.

This position is designed for an accounting professional who can independently manage the day-to-day books for multiple business clients while producing accurate, timely, and well-supported financial information.

This is not an entry-level bookkeeping position.

We are looking for someone who understands the accounting behind the transactions—not simply how to enter information into QuickBooks Online.

The successful candidate should be comfortable managing client books from transaction review and reconciliations through month-end close and financial statement preparation. You will work directly with business-owner clients and collaborate with our Accounting and Tax professionals to ensure financial records are accurate, current, and properly maintained.

What You'll DoFull-Charge Bookkeeping & Accounting

  • Maintain complete and accurate accounting records for multiple business clients.
  • Record, review, and properly classify financial transactions.
  • Manage and maintain the general ledger.
  • Reconcile bank, credit card, loan, and balance sheet accounts.
  • Prepare and post adjusting and recurring journal entries.
  • Review accounts receivable and accounts payable activity.
  • Properly record loan payments, fixed assets, owner contributions, distributions, and other balance sheet transactions.
  • Review client books for inaccurate classifications, duplicate transactions, unreconciled accounts, and other accounting issues.
  • Perform monthly and year-end closing procedures.
  • Maintain appropriate supporting documentation and accounting workpapers.

Monthly Financial Reporting

Prepare accurate monthly financial statements and reports, including:

  • Profit & Loss Statements
  • Balance Sheets
  • General Ledger reports
  • Other accounting reports as requested

Review financial statements for accuracy and unusual activity before delivery.

Identify significant variances, unusual balances, or accounting concerns requiring additional review.

Ensure client financial statements are accurate, organized, and ready to support business and tax decisions.

QuickBooks Online

  • Maintain multiple client companies within QuickBooks Online.
  • Review and manage bank and credit-card feeds.
  • Establish and maintain appropriate charts of accounts.
  • Create and maintain bank rules when appropriate.
  • Troubleshoot duplicate, missing, or incorrectly categorized transactions.
  • Perform cleanup and catch-up bookkeeping when necessary.
  • Identify opportunities to improve client accounting workflows.
  • Maintain accurate reconciliations and supporting documentation.

QuickBooks Online experience is required. QBO ProAdvisor Certification is strongly preferred.

Payroll Accounting & Reconciliation

  • Record and reconcile payroll activity within the general ledger.
  • Reconcile payroll wages, employer payroll taxes, employee deductions, benefits, and payroll liabilities.
  • Review payroll clearing and liability accounts.
  • Identify discrepancies between payroll reports and accounting records.
  • Work with Payroll Specialists and other Accounting team members to resolve discrepancies.
  • Assist with quarterly and year-end payroll reconciliations as appropriate.

Client Service

  • Communicate directly and professionally with assigned clients.
  • Request missing bank statements, receipts, payroll reports, loan statements, and other accounting information.
  • Respond to routine bookkeeping and accounting questions.
  • Explain accounting issues to clients in clear, understandable language.
  • Follow up on outstanding client requests and documentation.
  • Develop professional relationships with business-owner clients.
  • Maintain confidentiality of client financial and business information.

Tax Support

Our Accounting and Tax teams work collaboratively to ensure client books are properly maintained throughout the year and prepared for tax filing and planning.

The Staff Accountant / Full-Charge Bookkeeper will:

  • Maintain client books in a manner that supports accurate tax preparation.
  • Coordinate with Tax professionals regarding year-end accounting information and adjustments.
  • Assist with schedules and documentation requested for tax preparation.
  • Identify accounting issues that should be brought to the attention of a Senior Accountant or CPA.
  • Assist with year-end close and preparation of client books for tax returns.
  • Post year-end adjusting entries as directed by the appropriate accounting or tax professional.

This position does not independently provide tax advice outside the employee's qualifications and assigned responsibilities.

What Will Make You Successful at Epic?

Accounting Knowledge: You understand debits, credits, balance sheets, income statements, journal entries, accruals, and reconciliations—not just accounting software.

Accuracy: You take pride in producing books that reconcile and financial statements that can be relied upon.

Ownership: When you are assigned a client, you take responsibility for keeping their accounting work moving forward.

Problem Solving: When something doesn't reconcile, you investigate the cause instead of simply forcing the numbers to match.

Client Service: You understand that behind every set of books is a business owner who depends on accurate information.

Communication: You can professionally request information, explain accounting issues, and communicate concerns to clients and coworkers.

Organization: You can manage recurring deadlines and accounting responsibilities for multiple clients.

Technology: You are comfortable working extensively in QuickBooks Online, Microsoft 365, and cloud-based accounting and client-management systems.

Teamwork: You understand that your accounting work supports other professionals responsible for tax preparation, payroll, and client service.

QualificationsRequired

  • Minimum 2 years of hands-on bookkeeping or accounting experience.
  • Demonstrated experience independently maintaining business accounting records.
  • Strong working knowledge of QuickBooks Online.
  • Experience reconciling bank, credit-card, and balance sheet accounts.
  • Experience preparing or assisting with monthly financial statements.
  • Working knowledge of general ledger accounting and journal entries.
  • Understanding of Profit & Loss and Balance Sheet accounts.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
  • Ability to independently manage multiple clients, priorities, and deadlines.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work professionally with business-owner clients.
  • Experience using Microsoft Office, particularly Excel and Outlook.

Preferred

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or related field.
  • QuickBooks Online ProAdvisor Certification.
  • Experience working in a public accounting, outsourced accounting, bookkeeping, or client accounting services firm.
  • Experience maintaining books for multiple clients simultaneously.
  • Experience with payroll accounting and payroll reconciliations.
  • Experience with month-end and year-end close.
  • Experience preparing books for tax-return preparation.
  • Experience with accounting cleanup and catch-up projects.
  • Experience with Canopy Tax or comparable accounting/client-management systems.
