Location: Middle Tennessee

About Us

Rockwood Sustainable Solutions, LLC is a growing waste hauling, recycling, and transfer station company serving Middle Tennessee. We operate across multiple business entities and are seeking a detail-oriented accounting professional to join our finance team.

Position Summary

We are seeking a motivated, detail-oriented Staff Accountant to join our corporate accounting team. This position plays a key role in maintaining accurate financial records, managing accounts receivable and accounts payable, supporting intercompany accounting, and assisting with month-end close.

The ideal candidate is a strong accounting professional who can work independently, exercise sound judgment, identify and resolve issues, and take ownership of assigned responsibilities. This role requires more than transaction processing. We are looking for someone who understands the accounting behind the numbers, reviews contracts and billings with a critical eye, and proactively supports the Controller and CFO.

Key ResponsibilitiesAccounts Receivable & Customer Billing

  • Review customer contracts and agreements to ensure pricing, terms, and billing requirements are set up and invoiced correctly.
  • Set up and maintain new customer accounts, including pricing, billing terms, and supporting documentation.
  • Prepare and issue customer invoices, verifying accuracy against contracts, service records, and approved pricing.
  • Apply customer payments and maintain accurate customer account balances.
  • Monitor aging reports and proactively follow up on past-due accounts.
  • Investigate and resolve billing discrepancies, pricing differences, and customer disputes through resolution.
  • Serve as a point of contact for customer billing inquiries, working with operations and customer service personnel to resolve issues.
  • Assist with customer credit reviews and collection efforts.
  • Identify potential revenue recognition or billing concerns and bring them to management's attention.

Accounts Payable & Vendor Management

  • Review vendor agreements and contracts to verify that billed charges, rates, and terms are accurate and consistent with agreed pricing.
  • Review vendor invoices for accuracy, proper coding, and approval prior to payment.
  • Identify and process pass-through charges for proper rebilling to customers.
  • Reconcile vendor statements and resolve discrepancies, duplicate invoices, and overcharges.
  • Post, code, and reconcile company credit card activity.
  • Maintain accurate vendor records and supporting documentation.
  • Assist with cash flow planning by monitoring upcoming payments, vendor terms, and collections.
  • Ensure transactions are recorded in the correct period and assigned to the correct entity, account, and department.

Intercompany Accounting

  • Prepare and process intercompany billings and allocations across multiple legal entities.
  • Record and reconcile intercompany transactions and balances on a monthly basis.
  • Research and resolve intercompany differences in coordination with the Controller.

General Accounting & Month-End Close

  • Prepare and maintain balance sheet reconciliations and supporting schedules.
  • Prepare journal entries, accruals, prepaid expenses, and other month-end adjustments.
  • Research account variances and investigate unusual balances or fluctuations.
  • Support preparation of internal financial reports and schedules for management review.
  • Maintain organized, accurate, and audit-ready financial records.
  • Assist with year-end procedures, external audits, tax requests, and other reporting requirements.

Process Improvement & Team Support

  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, strengthen internal controls, and increase efficiency.
  • Take ownership of assigned tasks and follow issues through to resolution with minimal supervision.
  • Support special projects, system improvements, and other initiatives as the company grows.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance required.
  • Minimum of 2 years of accounting experience in public accounting, corporate accounting, or a similar professional environment.
  • Demonstrated experience with accounts receivable, accounts payable, account reconciliations, and general accounting principles.
  • Strong understanding of debits and credits, accrual accounting, and the impact of transactions on the financial statements.
  • Experience reviewing contracts or agreements for billing and payment accuracy preferred.
  • Experience with QuickBooks or a similar accounting platform preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel required; experience with advanced functions such as XLOOKUP/VLOOKUP, pivot tables, and complex formulas strongly preferred.
  • Multi-entity or intercompany accounting experience preferred.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with customers, vendors, and employees across departments.
  • High level of integrity, accountability, and attention to detail.

Ideal Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate is someone who takes initiative and works independently, thinks critically and understands the reasons behind accounting procedures, investigates problems rather than passing them along, and is comfortable recommending practical improvements. They want to continue developing professionally and take on increasing responsibility.

What We Offer

  • Competitive compensation based on experience and qualifications.
  • Exposure to multi-entity accounting, operational accounting, financial reporting, and process improvement.
  • Opportunities for professional growth and increasing responsibility.
  • A collaborative environment where initiative, accountability, and sound judgment are valued.
  • Company-sponsored benefits package.
