Staff Backend Engineer

New York City (4 days onsite)

Up to $325k base + equity

We're working with a fast-growing fintech infrastructure startup building the technology that enables seamless money movement between traditional finance and crypto.

They're looking for a Staff Backend Engineer to take technical ownership of core infrastructure powering payments, settlement and transaction routing across multiple blockchains and payment providers.

This is a hands-on senior IC role with significant influence over architecture, technical direction and engineering standards.

You'll be responsible for

• Architecting and building high-performance, low-latency backend systems
• Designing scalable APIs and distributed services for payments and transaction processing
• Solving complex engineering challenges around transaction routing, settlement, security and reliability
• Driving technical decisions and setting engineering standards across the backend
• Working closely with product and engineering teams to design and deliver new infrastructure
• Mentoring engineers and providing technical leadership without direct management responsibilities

What they're looking for

• Extensive experience building and scaling production backend systems
• Strong TypeScript proficiency
• Deep understanding of distributed systems, API design, databases and cloud infrastructure
• Proven experience owning complex technical architecture and driving engineering decisions
• Strong track record of delivering reliable, high-performance systems at scale
• Previous experience operating at Staff level or equivalent technical scope
• Comfortable working hands-on in a fast-moving startup environment

Bonus points for experience with payments infrastructure, financial systems, blockchain integrations or event-driven architectures.

Crypto experience is not essential, but experience building complex, high-availability infrastructure is.
