Staff Software Engineer, Backend (Fraud Decisioning)

For our client, we are seeking a Staff Software Engineer, Backend (Fraud Decisioning) to join the team of a leader in the Finance & Insurance space.

This role will focus on building and evolving backend systems that support risk-related decision-making at scale. You will partner closely with product, risk, operations, and other engineering teams to deliver reliable, maintainable solutions that help protect the business and its customers. The position calls for strong technical leadership, thoughtful system design, and the ability to translate complex requirements into clear, high-quality implementations.

You will also mentor engineers, raise the bar for code quality, and help shape how the team plans, executes, and evaluates technical work.

Location: Remote - US based candidates only, no visa sponsorship available

Compensation: $204,000 – $290,000 annually

Responsibilities

• Lead cross-functional initiatives from planning through execution
• Design and implement simple, elegant, and maintainable backend systems
• Review team members' work and provide feedback to ensure quality
• Mentor engineers and foster ownership and growth
• Incorporate stakeholder needs and advocate for team initiatives
• Conduct evaluations to inform hiring decisions and improve interview processes

Qualifications

• 6-10+ years of software engineering experience with leadership responsibilities
• Experience architecting and maintaining complex systems
• Strong collaboration skills with cross-functional teams
• Proven ability to mentor and develop junior engineers
• Expertise in synthesizing complex requirements into high-quality designs
• Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent practical experience
