Staff Software Engineer, Backend (Trust and Safety)

For our client, we are seeking a Staff Software Engineer, Backend (Trust and Safety) to join the team of a leader in the Finance & Insurance space.

This role will shape backend technical strategy for a critical trust and safety function, helping define how the team builds reliable systems over a multi-quarter roadmap. The engineer will partner closely with product, design, analytics, and other engineering stakeholders to translate business goals into scalable technical solutions. This position will also influence operational processes, system availability, and engineering standards that support long-term quality and ownership.

Location: Remote - US based candidates only, no visa sponsorship available

Compensation: $204,000 – $290,000 annually

Responsibilities

• Set and execute the technical strategy for a year-long roadmap
• Collaborate with product management, design, and analytics to support project sustainability
• Define and advocate for technical solutions and operational processes
• Ensure team operations and system availability through monitoring and alerting
• Establish code review and design standards to promote quality and ownership
• Develop team talent through feedback and mentorship
• Lead major projects from strategic planning through execution

Qualifications

• 8+ years of experience with backend systems design and development
• Proficiency in backend languages like Python or Kotlin
• Experience with distributed systems using AWS, MySQL, Spark, and Kubernetes
• Demonstrated ability to deliver major system features and components
• Comfortable navigating and designing large system architectures
• Strong verbal and written communication skills for cross-team collaboration
• Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent practical experience
