Summary:

A standardized patient is a person trained in a case portrayal to provide a patient’s health history, demonstrate physical exam findings, display emotions and/or other behaviors such as body language in a realistic, repeatable and consistent manner. Once the case portrayal is completed, the SP evaluates a learner’s clinical skills using standardized assessment tools. SPs provide feedback on learners’ communication skills either verbally or as “written feedback.” Standardized patients may work one-on-one with a learner or with a group of learners.
