What they need

In November 2015, STAT was launched as a new national media brand focused on health, medicine, and life sciences. Since then, we have grown to be the authoritative and trustworthy news media source for tough-minded coverage of the business of making medicines, health tech, science, and public health. We produce daily news, investigative articles, and narrative projects in addition to multimedia features, podcasts, and opinion pieces. Our team of editors and reporters have won numerous journalism awards, including being named twice as a Pulitzer finalist. STAT is affiliated with Boston Globe Media Partners but is independent from The Boston Globe.

Job Description:

STAT is looking for a sharp, high-caliber reporter to join our first-rate team covering the thriving biotechnology industry. This reporter would break news and write quick-turn analyses, but also deliver strong enterprise, including deeply reported company and trend stories; profiles of top executives and scientists; and narratives. There is also an opportunity for this reporter to participate on a range of STAT’s platforms, including our biotech podcast, The Readout Loud, and at our summits around the country. This reporter’s exact focus will depend on a candidate’s interests as well as STAT’s, but a curiosity about biotech startups and venture capital would be a plus.

Responsibilities:

  • Balance the demands of daily news coverage with longer, deeply reported enterprise.
  • Cover biotech readouts, company announcements, and virtually anything else of interest to readers tracking industry developments.
  • Keep on top of industry-wide trends, developments, and personalities.
  • Participate in our events, including as a moderator.
  • Be a key player on a top-notch team producing deep, provocative, and vital reporting of the life sciences industry.

Qualifications

  • A reporter with at least three years experience covering the biopharma industry.
  • A versatile writer prepared to dive in on a wide range of stories.
  • A self-starter, but also collaborative in nature. STAT thrives on a tight-knit, all-hands-on-deck culture and a strong team dynamic.
  • A willingness to adapt and be audience focused, with a curious mindset and a commitment to creating an inclusive work environment

We know that there are strong candidates who may not fit precisely into what we’ve described above or who have important skills we haven’t thought of. If that’s you, don’t hesitate to apply and tell us about yourself.

The STAT office is located in downtown Boston, near Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market, and is easily accessible by MBTA and commuter rail lines. We have colleagues in the organization that come into the office on a regular basis and colleagues that are based in various cities throughout the US. For this role, we will consider candidates who are based anywhere in the United States.
