What We’re Looking For
We don’t want students simply watching STEM demonstrations—we want them doing STEM.
Strong instructors should be able to introduce a concept, give students enough foundational knowledge to begin, and then guide them through the process of designing, building, coding, testing, troubleshooting, improving, and trying again.
Activities should encourage students to think critically, collaborate, solve problems, communicate their ideas, and develop confidence using STEM tools and technology.
Instruction should be differentiated for the developmental level of the students being served.
Responsibilities
STEM Instructors will:
- Lead approximately two hours of hands-on STEM instruction once per month.
- Facilitate engaging coding, robotics, engineering, and technology activities appropriate for the assigned grade band.
- Prepare students to successfully use STEM equipment, software, and materials.
- Provide clear instruction while allowing students opportunities to explore, experiment, troubleshoot, and independently solve problems.
- Adapt activities for different experience and ability levels.
- Create an environment where students are comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, testing ideas, and trying again.
- Connect activities to real-world STEM applications and careers whenever possible.
- Encourage teamwork, creativity, communication, critical thinking, and problem solving.
- Collaborate with Black SONs’ STEM Curriculum & Instruction team to ensure activities support the Academy’s broader learning objectives.
- Assist with preparation of materials and equipment necessary for each activity.
- Support basic assessment of student learning through observations, demonstrations, projects, challenges, or brief pre/post activity checks.
- Maintain a safe, organized, positive, and inclusive learning environment.
Preferred Qualifications
We’re especially interested in candidates with experience in one or more of the following areas:
- K–12 STEM education
- Computer science or coding instruction
- Robotics instruction or coaching
- Engineering education
- Technology education
- LEGO Education
- Sphero
- VEX Robotics
- Minecraft Education
- Artificial intelligence or emerging technologies
- Maker education, engineering design, or project-based learning
- STEM camps, after-school programs, clubs, competitions, or other youth STEM programs
Current or former elementary, middle, and high school STEM, science, technology, engineering, computer science, or robotics educators are strongly encouraged to apply.
We also welcome STEM professionals and college-level educators with substantial experience facilitating hands-on STEM activities with youth.
Grade-Band Instruction
Elementary School | Grades 3–5
Instruction should emphasize exploration, creativity, foundational coding and engineering concepts, and confidence using STEM tools. Activities should be highly interactive and provide clear structure while giving students opportunities to build, test, and improve their creations.
Middle School | Grades 6–8
Instruction should introduce greater technical complexity, independent problem solving, coding, robotics, engineering design, and collaborative challenges. Students should begin connecting technical skills with real-world STEM fields and careers.
High School | Grades 9–12
Instruction should provide more advanced technical challenges and greater student independence. Activities should strengthen coding, robotics, engineering design, troubleshooting, project development, and technical problem-solving skills while connecting students to college pathways, STEM careers, and workforce applications.
Applicants may be considered for one or multiple grade bands based on their experience and expertise.
