STEM Intern – IQ Athletes Program
Boys & Girls Clubs
Approximately 12 hours/week | $15/hour
About the Program
IQ Athletes is an innovative, grant-funded STEM enrichment program that connects science, math, and engineering concepts to sports and physical activity. Serving 3rd–8th grade youth across four Boys & Girls Clubs in Raleigh, the program will use hands-on, sports-based lessons—including the nationally recognized NBA Math Hoops curriculum—to help youth build confidence in STEM and see themselves in future STEM careers.
We are seeking two passionate, energetic STEM Interns to lead instruction and inspire young people who are historically underrepresented in STEM fields.
Position Summary
STEM Interns will work four days per week, 3 hours per day to facilitate two weekly STEM sessions at two assigned Boys & Girls Club locations during each 8-week program cycle (fall, spring, and summer). Interns will deliver engaging, developmentally appropriate lessons that integrate sports science, math, physics, anatomy, and engineering concepts.
This role is ideal for college students pursuing degrees in STEM, education, sports science, public health, or related fields, who enjoy hands-on programming and working with underserved youth.
Key Responsibilities
Program Delivery
- Facilitate two STEM sessions per week at each assigned Club site (approx. 12 hours/week). This equates to 4 days per week, 3 hours per day.
- Manage groups of 15-20 youth independently, leading one 3rd-5th grade group and one middle school group each day.
- Lead instruction using the NBA Math Hoops curriculum and sports-themed STEM lessons aligned with NC Science and Math Standards.
- Adapt lesson plans to meet the developmental needs of 3rd–8th graders.
- Create a positive, engaging, and inclusive learning environment for diverse groups of youth.
Curriculum & Planning
- Prepare materials for each lesson and maintain organized program spaces.
- Support the creation of new STEM lessons connected to sports, health, and physical activity.
- Facilitate program with fidelity.
- Assist youth with hands-on activities, experiments, and final project showcases.
Youth Engagement
- Build supportive relationships with Club members and encourage consistent participation.
- Effectively manage behavior to conduct sessions.
Evaluation & Data
- Collect attendance data for each session.
- Administer pre- and post-program surveys focused on STEM interest and learning.
- Support evaluation of program by using data to assess findings.
Collaboration
- Work closely with Club staff to provide effective programming.
- Participate in training on youth development, safety, and program delivery.
- May coordinate with community partners (e.g., Wake Tech, NC Courage, Carolina Hurricanes) during career exploration activities.
Qualifications
Required
- Enrollment in a college or university program (STEM, education, sports science, health sciences, engineering, psychology, or related majors preferred).
- Interest in STEM education and working with youth ages 8–14.
- Ability to lead hands-on, interactive lessons independently.
- Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to provide in-person programming at two Raleigh Clubs (ie. Must have reliable transportation)
- Must pass background checks and complete required Boys & Girls Clubs onboarding and training.
Preferred
- Experience working with youth in educational or recreation settings.
- Knowledge of basic STEM concepts (math, physiology, engineering, or physics).
- Comfort teaching in active environments.
Schedule & Compensation
- $15/hour
- Approximately 12 hours per week, for each 8-week program cycle (fall, spring, summer).
- Must commit to serving the Spring cycle (start date January/February). May serve more cycles if interested.
- Hours typically fall between 3:00 p.m.–7:00 p.m. on weekdays, depending on Club schedules.
