Storage & Backup Engineer – Defence Project | 6-Month Contract

Location: Edinburgh (Mostly remote with 1–2 days onsite per week)

Contract: Inside IR35, 6 months £425 a day

Security Clearance:

Active SC Clearance required

ABOUT YOUR ROLE

We're recruiting for an experienced Storage & Backup Engineer to join an established IT operations team supporting an exciting defence programme involving helicopter technology and associated systems.

This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to a technically interesting defence environment, supporting critical enterprise storage and backup infrastructure while helping to improve operational resilience, service performance and automation.

The role is predominantly remote, requiring onsite attendance in Edinburgh approximately 1–2 days per week.

WHAT WILL YOU DO?

• Support day-to-day storage and backup operations, including daily checks, monitoring and manual backup refreshes.
• Perform BAU storage management activities, including Robocopy operations, directory structure maintenance and Distributed File System (DFS) administration.
• Maintain and support enterprise storage and backup environments.
• Investigate and respond to backup failures, storage issues and service incidents.
• Manage operational requests and incidents through ServiceNow and Azure DevOps (ADO).
• Provide storage and backup support to ongoing digital solutions projects and delivery activities.
• Identify opportunities to improve operational processes, service reliability and automation.
• Collaborate with wider IT operations and project teams to ensure effective service delivery.

WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR?

• Experience supporting enterprise storage and backup environments in an operational capacity.
• Strong understanding of backup operations, troubleshooting and incident resolution.
• Experience performing BAU storage administration and support activities.
• Ability to work effectively within an established IT operations team.
• Active SC Security Clearance.

NICE TO HAVE, BUT NOT ESSENTIAL

• Operational experience with one or more of the following:
• Dell EMC Avamar
• Veritas NetBackup
• IBM Storage Protect / Storage Protect Plus
• Experience with Robocopy and DFS administration.
• Familiarity with ServiceNow and Azure DevOps.
• Experience supporting IT infrastructure within defence or other security-sensitive environments.
