Structural Designer

Role Description

The Structural Designer is responsible for developing structural designs, preparing engineering drawings, and producing technical documentation for building, infrastructure, and construction projects. The role involves translating engineering concepts and project requirements into detailed structural solutions that support safety, stability, functionality, and compliance with applicable design standards.

Key responsibilities include preparing structural layouts, sections, elevations, foundation plans, reinforcement details, and construction drawings for beams, columns, slabs, foundations, and other structural components. The Structural Designer interprets architectural drawings, engineering specifications, and design requirements to produce accurate and coordinated technical documentation for project planning and implementation.

The position involves collaborating with structural engineers, architects, project managers, and other technical professionals to coordinate design information and resolve discrepancies between structural and architectural elements. Responsibilities include reviewing drawings, checking dimensions and annotations, identifying potential design conflicts, and incorporating revisions to maintain consistency across project documentation.

The Structural Designer uses computer-aided design (CAD), building information modeling (BIM), and other relevant engineering software to develop detailed drawings and three-dimensional structural models. The role also includes assisting with design calculations, reviewing material specifications, evaluating structural components, and supporting the preparation of technical submissions in accordance with project requirements and relevant engineering standards.

Additional responsibilities include maintaining organized drawing registers, tracking revisions, updating design records, and conducting quality checks on technical documents before submission. The designer supports coordination meetings, responds to technical queries, and assists with resolving design-related issues to facilitate smooth communication among project stakeholders.

The role also contributes to design optimization by identifying opportunities to improve structural efficiency, reduce material waste, simplify construction processes, and enhance coordination between engineering disciplines. The successful candidate demonstrates strong technical understanding, attention to detail, effective communication, and a commitment to producing accurate, practical, and reliable structural design documentation.

Qualifications

• Degree or diploma in Structural Engineering, Civil Engineering, Structural Design, or a related discipline.
• Knowledge of structural systems, construction methods, and engineering drawing principles.
• Proficiency in AutoCAD and familiarity with structural modeling or BIM software.
• Ability to interpret architectural drawings, structural plans, technical specifications, and engineering documentation.
• Understanding of common structural materials, including reinforced concrete, structural steel, and masonry.
• Familiarity with relevant building codes, structural design standards, and construction safety requirements.
• Strong technical drawing, mathematical, and spatial visualization skills.
• Ability to identify drawing discrepancies and coordinate technical information accurately.
