What they need

Nordholm Companies Inc. specializes in heavy lift equipment and heavy steel fabrication. We are seeking an experienced Structural Engineer to support the design, analysis, and development of custom equipment and fabricated steel assemblies.

Our projects include lifting and jacking systems, transporter frames, equipment supports, lifting attachments, and other custom structures. This position offers the opportunity to work directly with engineering, project management, and fabrication personnel, taking projects from initial concepts through detailed design and fabrication support.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and document design loads, load combinations, support conditions, and structural load paths.
  • Analyze steel members, plate assemblies, welded and bolted connections, pins, and lifting attachments.
  • Evaluate strength, deflection, buckling, stability, fatigue, and dynamic loading as applicable to each project.
  • Perform engineering calculations and finite element analysis (FEA), checking computer results against independent calculations and sound engineering judgment.
  • Prepare organized calculation packages, technical reports, and drawing markups for internal and customer review.
  • Coordinate with designers to develop practical fabrication drawings and resolve material, connection, and assembly details.
  • Support design reviews, respond to technical questions, and assist with fabrication and testing issues.
  • Sign and seal engineering deliverables when required, within the engineer’s licensure, competence, and responsible charge.

Required qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil, structural, or mechanical engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline.
  • Minimum 2 years of relevant experience in structural analysis and design of steel structures or equipment.
  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) license, with Washington licensure required before undertaking duties that require it.
  • Demonstrated experience designing welded and bolted steel connections and fabricated plate assemblies.
  • Proficiency with structural analysis or FEA software and the ability to explain modeling assumptions, limitations, and results.
  • Ability to read and review engineering drawings, fabrication drawings, and welding symbols.
  • Practical understanding of fabrication methods, material selection, tolerances, and assembly requirements.
  • Ability to manage assigned engineering work independently, communicate clearly, and meet agreed project schedules.

Preferred qualifications

  • Washington Structural Engineer (SE) credential.
  • Experience with heavy lift equipment, below-the-hook lifting devices, jacking systems, transporters, cranes, or marine and industrial structures.
  • Experience with high-strength steel, including consideration of toughness, fatigue, weldability, and material availability.
  • Familiarity with applicable AISC, AWS, and ASME standards, including ASME BTH-1 and B30.20 for relevant lifting-device work.
  • Experience with 3D CAD (Preferably Solidworks) and coordination between analysis models and fabrication drawings.
  • Experience developing test plans and supporting load testing or prototype validation.

How to apply

Please submit your résumé and a brief description of two relevant projects. Identify your engineering responsibilities, the types of structures or equipment involved, analysis software used, and current professional licenses. Please do not include confidential information from previous employers or clients.
