1. Job Summary

Our client is seeking a competent and commercially minded Structural Engineer with valid registration with the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) and demonstrable experience supervising construction projects.

The successful candidate will be responsible for supervising construction projects, overseeing the execution of Vartis Technic's home maintenance, repairs, installations, and renovation jobs, and actively participating in the management and growth of the business.

This is a hands-on role that combines structural engineering, construction supervision, technical operations management, and business management. The candidate will be expected to move beyond technical responsibilities to help improve operational efficiency, manage technicians and subcontractors, control costs, enhance customer satisfaction, and identify opportunities to increase revenue and profitability.

The ideal candidate must be technically strong, organised, commercially aware, proactive, and willing to take ownership of both day-to-day operations and broader business objectives.

2. Key Responsibilities

• Supervise building construction projects from foundation works through structural construction and other assigned stages.
• Monitor construction activities to ensure compliance with approved drawings, engineering specifications, quality standards, and applicable building regulations.
• Coordinate contractors, subcontractors, artisans, and other professionals working on construction sites.
• Monitor construction progress against agreed timelines, budgets, and project milestones.
• Identify construction defects, technical challenges, and potential risks, and ensure appropriate corrective actions are taken.
• Prepare regular site progress reports and provide updates on project status, costs, risks, and outstanding issues.
• Support quality control, health and safety compliance, and proper project documentation.
• Supervise property maintenance jobs involving plumbing, electrical works, air conditioning, roofing, painting, carpentry, appliance repairs, cleaning, interior design, renovation, windows, and general property maintenance.
• Review job requests, assess technical requirements, and ensure that the scope of work is properly understood before execution.
• Assign jobs to appropriate technicians and subcontractors based on competence, availability, location, and job complexity.
• Monitor ongoing jobs and follow up with technicians to ensure timely completion.
• Inspect completed jobs or arrange appropriate quality checks before signing them off.
• Resolve technical challenges and escalate major cost variations, scope changes, and operational issues to management.
• Coordinate and supervise technicians, artisans, subcontractors, and field personnel.
• Develop and manage job schedules to ensure effective allocation of available resources.
• Build and maintain a reliable network of qualified technicians and subcontractors.
• Recommend and implement practical measures to improve productivity, reduce costs, and increase profitability.
• Help develop standard operating procedures for job allocation, site inspections, quotations, execution, quality control, and job closure.
• Monitor the performance of service categories and identify opportunities to improve their commercial performance.
• Identify opportunities to increase repeat business, customer retention, referrals, and demand for Vartis Technic services.
• Help develop systems and processes that enable the company to manage a growing volume of construction projects and service jobs.
• Help ensure that work is commercially viable without compromising safety or quality.
• Prepare regular reports on construction progress, service jobs, technician performance, costs, and operational challenges.
• Maintain accurate records to support decisions and business planning.

3. Qualifications and Experience

• Degree in Civil Engineering or Structural Engineering from a recognised institution.
• Valid COREN registration is mandatory.
• Minimum of five years of relevant post-qualification experience, with demonstrable experience supervising construction projects.
• Practical knowledge of reinforced concrete construction, foundations, structural elements, building methods, and construction quality control.
• Experience coordinating contractors, artisans, technicians, and subcontractors.
• Experience in property maintenance, building renovations, repairs, installations, or facilities management will be an advantage.
• Demonstrated interest in business operations, cost control, team management, and commercial performance.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word for costing, reporting, and operational tracking.
• Knowledge of AutoCAD and structural engineering software is an advantage.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
