Build Practical Engineering From Concept Through Installation
YorkHoist is seeking a Structural Engineer to help build and expand our internal engineering capability for overhead crane systems and industrial material-handling projects. This is a hands-on role for an engineer who wants to see designs move from calculations and drawings into fabrication, installation, and real-world operation.
You will work closely with Operations, Project Management, Manufacturing, Service, Installation, clients, vendors, and outside Professional Engineers. You will own much of the internal design process while coordinating final professional review and stamping when required.
What You Will Do
- Develop structural designs and calculations for crane runways, freestanding support structures, columns, beams, bracing, connections, foundations, and related equipment.
- Create equipment layouts, general arrangement drawings, fabrication drawings, installation drawings, bills of materials, and controlled revisions.
- Perform structural analysis and preliminary finite element analysis when appropriate.
- Translate project requirements and field conditions into practical, constructible, and cost-conscious solutions.
- Collaborate with the Operations Manager and project managers on priorities, design inputs, deliverables, schedules, and approval requirements.
- Support estimating, project planning, purchasing, manufacturing, installation, commissioning, inspection, repair, and modernization work.
- Review field measurements, inspection findings, existing structures, vendor information, and project documentation.
- Identify missing information, technical risk, and constructability concerns early and communicate them clearly.
- Prepare organized calculation and drawing packages for outside PE review and respond to review comments.
- Help develop engineering standards, calculation templates, design libraries, standard details, and SOLIDWORKS PDM workflows.
- Visit client and project sites periodically to verify conditions, obtain measurements, and support field execution.
What You Will Bring
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline.
- Working knowledge of structural analysis, mechanics of materials, steel design, connection design, and engineering calculations.
- Ability to develop and interpret clear engineering, fabrication, and installation drawings.
- Sound technical judgment and the ability to recognize when additional analysis or professional review is required.
- Strong written and verbal communication with project, shop, field, vendor, and client stakeholders.
- Strong organization, attention to detail, and ownership of calculations, assumptions, revisions, and approvals.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and communicate risks or delays early.
- Willingness to travel periodically to client and project sites.
Preferred Experience
- FE or EIT certification, an equivalent Graduate Engineer designation, or Professional Engineer licensure. These credentials are preferred but not required.
- Three or more years of structural design, industrial engineering, or related professional experience.
- Experience with overhead cranes, crane runways, monorails, material-handling equipment, or industrial lifting systems. Crane-industry experience is preferred but not required.
- Experience designing structural steel framing, connections, foundations, or equipment-support structures.
- Experience in custom fabrication, manufacturing, construction, or industrial service.
- Experience with SOLIDWORKS, SOLIDWORKS Simulation, PDM, structural-analysis software, or comparable engineering tools.
- Familiarity with applicable steel, building, and material-handling codes and standards.
How the Role Works
This position reports to the Vice President of Service and Manufacturing and works closely with the Operations Manager and project-management team. Project Management owns scope, schedule, budget, and overall project execution; the Structural Engineer owns the technical design, calculations, drawings, documentation, and identification of engineering risks. YorkHoist will continue to use approved outside Professional Engineers for final review and stamping where required.
Why Join YorkHoist
- Help build an internal engineering function rather than inherit a narrow or highly segmented role.
- Own work from early concept through fabrication, installation, and field support.
- Create standards, templates, design libraries, and workflows that will shape how future projects are delivered.
- Work directly with experienced project, manufacturing, service, and installation teams.
- Gain broad exposure to custom industrial equipment and structural applications.
Work Environment
This role combines office engineering with time in manufacturing and at client or installation sites. Appropriate personal protective equipment is required in active shop and construction environments.
Monday - Friday 6:30am - 3:30PM
Occasional weekends as needed
