Structural Engineer (PE)

The job

We need a licensed structural engineer in our Phoenix office. You will take projects from the first phone call through construction: size the members, run the lateral, draw the details, answer the contractor, and stamp the set.

The work is mostly residential, multifamily, and mixed-use commercial across Arizona. Wood is the bread and butter. It is not the whole menu. We also design in CMU, cold-formed and structural steel, concrete, and ICF structures. We are taking on more mid-sized commercial work. The projects that land on your desk will change. That is the point.

You will not sit in a corner and crank calcs. You will talk to architects, builders, and plan reviewers, and you will be the engineer of record on your own jobs.

What you will do

• Design gravity, wind, and seismic systems, foundations, and connections for wood, masonry, cold-formed and structural steel, and concrete buildings.
• Produce construction documents clear enough that the contractor gets it right the first time.
• Run your own projects: scope, fee, schedule, and client contact.
• Answer plan-review comments and field questions, and make site visits when a job needs one.
• Review and mentor the work of EITs and drafters.
• Help build and maintain our design standards and details so the next job goes faster than the last.

What we require

• Professional Engineer license, any state. You must obtain Arizona registration by comity within six months of hire; we pay the fees. California licensure is preferred but not required.
• Production experience designing and stamping buildings. Wood-frame lateral and gravity design is a must. CMU, steel, and concrete experience are also required.
• Extensive knowledge of construction standards and practices for all common building types and materials.
• Working knowledge of the IBC, IRC, ASCE 7, NDS, ACI, AISC, and TMS.
• AutoCAD. Revit and the common analysis tools are a plus.
• You catch your own mistakes. You ask when you do not know. You would rather fix a detail than defend it.
• You work well with a small team and can say what you need to say to a client without bruising the relationship.

Pay and benefits

Pay: $95,000 to $120,000 per year, based on experience

Schedule: Full time, Monday to Friday, day shift, flexible hours

About us

Sound Structural Solutions has been in business since 2005. Ron Skinner and Damon Fleming started it after meeting at Montana State, and it has grown to offices in Washington and Arizona with a team of licensed engineers, drafters, and project staff. The Phoenix office is run by Kurtis Chivens and Emory Chamberlain.
