Structural Steel Designer

We are a leading Steel Fabrication and Erection company based in Sharjah, UAE, seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Structural Steel Designer to join our in-house design and detailing team.

The Structural Steel Designer will be responsible for producing detailed fabrication drawings, shop drawings, connection details, and erection drawings for structural steel projects including industrial buildings, warehouses, mezzanine floors, platforms, pipe racks, staircases, PEB structures, and heavy steel fabrication works across the UAE and GCC.

This is a hands-on detailing role — ideal for candidates with strong experience in TEKLA Structures and/or AutoCAD, who understand the full journey from design model to fabrication shop floor.

Shop Drawing & Fabrication Drawing Preparation

• Prepare detailed shop drawings and fabrication drawings for structural steel members including beams, columns, trusses, bracings, purlins, girts, and connections
• Prepare connection details — end plates, gusset plates, base plates, splice connections, cleats, and stiffeners
• Prepare erection drawings showing member placement, orientation, bolt patterns, and lifting points
• Prepare anchor bolt layout plans and base plate setting-out drawings
• Prepare steel staircase, handrail, ladder, platform, and walkway fabrication drawings
• Prepare roof and wall cladding layout and fixing detail drawings

3D Modelling & Detailing

• Create accurate 3D structural steel models using TEKLA Structures or AutoCAD
• Extract member lists, connection schedules, and part drawings from 3D models
• Perform clash detection and resolve geometric conflicts in the model
• Coordinate model with architectural, MEP, and civil drawings
• Generate NC files (CNC output) for workshop cutting and drilling from TEKLA

Bill of Materials & Quantity Takeoff

• Prepare detailed Bill of Materials (BOM) and material lists from drawings
• Calculate steel weights and quantities for procurement and cost estimation
• Prepare bolt lists, weld schedules, and surface treatment schedules
• Maintain and update BOM as drawing revisions are issued

Drawing Review & Quality Control

• Check and verify all drawings for dimensional accuracy, code compliance, and buildability
• Ensure drawings are practical and suitable for workshop fabrication and site erection
• Review drawings against structural engineer's design calculations and GA drawings
• Ensure all shop drawings are approved before release to fabrication workshop
• Incorporate review comments from structural engineers, clients, and consultants

Coordination & Communication

• Coordinate with Structural Engineers on design intent and technical requirements
• Liaise directly with Fabrication Workshop team to resolve production queries
• Coordinate with Site Erection team on erection sequences and fit-up issues
• Attend drawing review meetings with clients and consultants
• Manage drawing register and revision control for all issued drawings
• Raise and respond to RFIs (Request for Information) from workshop and site

Standards & Code Compliance

• Ensure all drawings comply with AISC, Eurocode 3 (EN 1993), and BS 5950 standards
• Apply correct welding symbols, bolt grades, and material specifications per project requirements
• Ensure compliance with client specifications and project-specific drawing standards
• Apply correct surface preparation and paint system notations on fabrication drawings

Education

• Bachelor's Degree or Diploma in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering

Experience

• Minimum 2 to 6 years of experience as a Structural Steel Designer or Steel Detailer
• Hands-on experience in steel fabrication detailing, shop drawings, and erection drawings
• UAE or GCC experience is a strong advantage
• Experience in TEKLA Structures is highly preferred
