Structural Steel Estimator

Key Responsibilities:

• Review plans, specifications, schedules, addenda, tender documents and contract requirements.
• Complete accurate material take-offs for structural steel, plate, fixings, coatings, transport items and associated components.
• Calculate fabrication, welding, surface treatment, drafting, project management and erection labour requirements.
• Obtain, compare and assess supplier and subcontractor pricing.
• Prepare detailed cost estimates, quotation breakdowns, tender submissions, clarifications, qualifications, inclusions and exclusions.
• Liaise with clients, builders, engineers, suppliers and subcontractors to clarify scope and support tender negotiations.
• Assist with variation pricing, post-tender reviews, handover information and cost support for awarded projects.

Experience Required:

• Strong understanding of steel fabrication, erection processes, structural steel components, workshop workflows and site installation requirements.
• Ability to read and interpret structural, architectural, civil and shop drawings.
• Accurate material take-off skills and strong numerical, analytical and commercial judgement.
• Advanced Excel skills and experience using estimating templates, pricing schedules and cost tracking tools.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• High attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple tenders, priorities and deadlines.
• Trade qualification in fabrication, boiler making, welding, steel detailing, construction or engineering will be highly regarded.
• Knowledge of AS/NZS 5131 and relevant Australian standards will be highly regarded.
• Experience using estimating software, steel detailing outputs, project management systems, supplier portals or ERP/job costing systems is required.
