What they need

Position Overview

McCurdy Charter School is seeking a dedicated, knowledgeable Structured Literacy Coach to join our instructional leadership team. This role is pivotal in elevating English Language Arts (ELA) outcomes across both elementary and secondary grades, with a deep emphasis on early literacy development and the Science of Reading.

The Structured Literacy Coach will collaborate directly with teaching staff, building upon our existing systems to embed evidence-based instructional strategies into everyday classroom practice. As a key instructional leader, you will support educators through modeling, co-teaching, data analysis, and professional learning—specifically facilitating and reinforcing Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LETRS) training.

Key Responsibilities

Instructional Coaching & Support

  • Provide job-embedded, non-evaluative coaching to K–12 teaching staff, including classroom observations, modeling, co-planning, and actionable feedback.
  • Guide teachers in implementing Structured Literacy practices, explicitly addressing phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension strategies aligned with the Science of Reading.
  • Support teachers in integrating LETRS principles into daily instruction, unit planning, and core curriculum design.

System Alignment & Student Achievement

  • Build upon current schoolwide literacy systems, routines, and interventions to strengthen tier 1, 2, and 3 instructional practices.
  • Lead grade-level and department data meetings to analyze student literacy growth, identify skill gaps, and adjust instructional strategies accordingly.
  • Drive targeted strategies to improve early literacy outcomes in elementary grades while supporting content-area literacy skills in secondary grades.

Professional Development & Community

  • Design and deliver high-quality, continuous professional development focused on evidence-based literacy instruction.
  • Serve as a active advocate for the Science of Reading across the school community.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Support broader school leadership initiatives and assist with overall academic program needs as appropriate to advance the school's mission.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Education, Special Education, Literacy, or a related field (Master’s degree in Literacy, Reading, or Curriculum & Instruction preferred).
  • Licensure: Valid New Mexico Teaching License (Level 2 or Level 3 preferred) with a K–12 Reading Endorsement or equivalent certification.
  • Specialized Training: Formal training and demonstrated expertise in LETRS (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling) and Structured Literacy models.
  • Experience:
  • Minimum of 3–5 years of successful classroom teaching experience with documented success in literacy instruction.
  • Demonstrated experience in instructional coaching, teacher mentorship, or facilitating adult learning programs.
  • Familiarity with early literacy intervention tools and secondary content-area reading strategies.
  • Skills: Strong communication, interpersonal, and data-analysis skills, with a proven ability to build trusting, collaborative relationships with adult learners.
