Preferred Majors: Statistics, Data Science, or related quantitative fields
Power Your Future: Help Shape the Electricity Markets Behind New England’s Clean Energy Transition
Are you a graduate student who loves coding, data, simulation, and solving real-world problems? Join ISO New England as a Power Market Simulation Intern and use your analytical skills to support the systems that help keep electricity reliable for millions of people across New England. In this hands-on internship, you’ll work with economists, engineers, data scientists, and market experts to turn complex market data into meaningful insights, prototype tools, and help shape the future of wholesale electricity markets.
Who We Are
ISO New England is one of the most pivotal energy organizations you may not know yet. We operate the region’s power grid 24/7, administer New England’s wholesale electricity markets, and help plan for a reliable, cleaner energy future. Our work supports the electricity needs of millions of people across Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont—helping homes, campuses, hospitals, businesses, and communities stay powered every day.
About the Market Development Team
The Market Development department designs and enhances the rules that support open, competitive, transparent, and economically efficient markets for energy, capacity, and ancillary services in New England. The team evaluates proposed market changes, analyzes market performance, and develops data-driven improvements to support reliable and efficient electricity markets. This work blends technical analysis, data engineering, simulation, economics, and market design—making it an ideal environment for students who want to apply quantitative skills to meaningful energy challenges.
What You’ll Work On
This internship is designed for a highly technical, analytically curious student who is excited to apply coding, statistics, and data skills to electricity market simulation and decision support. You’ll contribute to practical projects that help the department explore market design questions, improve analytical workflows, and communicate simulation results more effectively.
Projects may include:
<ul>
<li>Developing prototypes, pilot tools, or proof-of-concept solutions to improve analysis workflows.</li>
<li>Creating dashboard concepts, exploratory visualizations, and analytical outputs for simulation and market results.</li>
<li>Supporting coding, data preparation, and analysis for market design or simulation studies.</li>
<li>Transforming complex datasets into usable insights for internal decision-making.</li>
<li>Contributing to tools and workflows that may later be further developed in collaboration with IT or other business areas.</li>
</ul>
You’ll gain hands-on experience with real analytical and development challenges in the electricity market space, including exposure to simulation, dispatch logic, market analytics, data workflows, and internal tool development. The experience is designed to help you build marketable technical skills while contributing to work that matters.
This is a coding-intensive internship focused on practical problem-solving, quantitative analytics, and tool development. You’ll help turn complex data into actionable information, support cross-functional projects, design efficient data workflows, and produce clear outputs for both technical and business audiences.
How You’ll Make an Impact
Your work will help accelerate analytical efforts connected to integrated market simulation and multi-interval dispatch initiatives. By bringing strong coding, data, and visualization skills to the team, you’ll help increase capacity for experimentation, process improvement, and faster insight generation.
In this role, you may help the team:
<ul>
<li>Develop early-stage prototypes and proof-of-concept tools more quickly.</li>
<li>Create pilot dashboards or exploratory visual products that improve how results are reviewed and communicated.</li>
<li>Support senior economists and analysts with data preparation, coding, and structural analysis.</li>
<li>Expand the department’s ability to test ideas, streamline workflows, and improve analytical processes.</li>
</ul>
What We’re Looking For
<ul>
<li>Currently pursuing a master’s degree in statistics, data science, computer science, economics, engineering, mathematics, operations research, or another relevant quantitative field.</li>
<li>Strong coding skills, with Python required.</li>
<li>Working knowledge of SQL for querying, transforming, and analyzing large datasets.</li>
<li>Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including comfort working with structured data, identifying patterns, and translating questions into analytical approaches.</li>
<li>Familiarity with quantitative concepts such as regression, statistics, hypothesis testing, or related analytical methods.</li>
<li>Ability to communicate findings clearly through writing, visuals, and presentations.</li>
<li>Preferred experience with R or SAS.</li>
<li>Preferred experience with Git or other version control tools.</li>
</ul>
