Subject Matter Expert Math - (K-12)

About the Role:

This is a Math Subject Matter Expert (SME) role focused on the K-12 curriculum. The role involves creating, refining, and evaluating high-quality educational content for K-12mathematics, specifically targeting both student-facing materials and teacher resources. Responsibilities also include developing comprehensive lesson plans, ensuring the absolute accuracy of mathematical concepts, and collaborating with other professionals including instructional designers and copyeditors to design learning materials that align tightly with educational standards. The role requires strong teamwork, effective communication, and meticulous attention to detail to ensure all materials meet academic expectations, pedagogical best practices, and student needs.

Responsibilities

• Content Creation & Editing: Write, edit, and review clear, engaging, and age-appropriate math content for student textbooks, digital platforms, and assessments.
• Teacher Resource Development: Develop robust teacher-facing materials, including facilitation guides, scaffolding strategies, differentiation options, and rubrics.
• Standards Alignment: Map and review content to ensure strict alignment with current K-12 educational standards (e.g., Common Core State Standards, TEKS, B.E.S.T.).
• Quality Assurance: Fact-check and copyedit existing content for mathematical accuracy, correct terminology, grade-level appropriate language, and formatting consistency.
• Assessment Design: Create and validate diverse assessment items, including multiple-choice, constructed response, and technology-enhanced items (TEIs).
• Inclusive Design: Incorporate diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) guidelines into math scenarios and word problems to ensure relatability for all students.

Qualifications

• Strong proficiency in Mathematics and Mathematics Education.
• Experience in Curriculum Development and Lesson Planning.
• Knowledge of K-12 educational standards and current teaching practices.
• Effective Communication skills, both written and oral, with specialized ability to write clear instructional text.
• Bachelor's degree in Mathematics, Education, or a related field.
• Prior teaching or curriculum development experience in a K-12 setting is a plus.
• Familiarity with digital educational tools and technologies is advantageous.

Required Skills

• Educational Publishing Experience: Proven experience writing, developmental editing, or reviewing math content for an EdTech company or educational publisher.
• Technical Typesetting: Familiarity with mathematical typesetting tools and markup languages (e.g., MathType, LaTeX, MathML).
• Pedagogical Expertise: Deep understanding of mathematical progressions and how foundational concepts build across grade bands (K-5, 6-8, 9-12).
• Project Management: Strong time-management skills with the ability to adhere tostrict publication deadlines, implement constructive feedback, and adapt tovarying project guidelines.
