Job Description

The West Fairlee Public Library is seeking a dependable and flexible Substitute Library Assistant to provide coverage during librarian absences, including both scheduled time off and occasional short-notice needs.

This position is ideal for someone who enjoys working with people, supporting a community library, and creating a welcoming environment for patrons of all ages.

Training will be provided.

Responsibilities

• Assist patrons in locating library materials and resources
• Check materials in and out using the library circulation system
• Provide friendly customer service to patrons of all ages
• Assist children and families during library visits and programs
• Answer basic questions about library services and technology
• Perform light clerical and organizational tasks
• Shelve and organize library materials
• Open and close the library as assigned
• Maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming library environment
• Follow library policies and procedures

Qualifications

• Must be at least 18 years old
• Ability to pass a background check
• Basic computer skills and willingness to learn library software
• Strong communication and customer service skills
• Ability to work independently and responsibly
• Comfortable working with children, families, and the general public
• Flexible availability, including occasional short-notice coverage

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous experience in customer service, retail, education, childcare, volunteer work, or libraries
• Familiarity with basic office technology and computer applications

Schedule

This is an on-call substitute position with no guaranteed hours. Hours will vary based on staffing needs and librarian absences. Some shifts may be scheduled in advance, while others may require short-notice availability.
