Tauranga City Council is offering a range of paid internships across different teams—from Infrastructure to emergency management to environmental planning and pollution prevention.

Interns will work from 16th November 2026 to early February 2027, with a break over the Christmas period. Each role offers hands-on experience, mentoring, and the chance to contribute to real projects that matter.

·       Major Projects - Support the Major Projects team with project coordination, research and reporting while gaining insight into the delivery of significant projects shaping Tauranga.

·       Emergency Management x 2 - Support emergency readiness and continuous improvement by reviewing plans and recommendations, researching community resilience, and contributing to practical preparedness activities.

·       Environmental Planning x 2 - Combine research and fieldwork to examine land uses within Tauranga’s industrial zones, then prepare clear findings to support planning, consenting and monitoring work.

·      Stormwater Operations - Help develop a practical framework for assessing stormwater pond siltation through field inspections, data analysis and recommendations that support future maintenance priorities.

Who we are looking for

These internships are open to students who have completed or will have completed at least their 2nd year of study toward a New Zealand tertiary qualification by the time the internship begins.

We’re looking for people who are:

• Keen to learn and ready to apply their skills in a real-world setting
• Good communicators who enjoy working with others
• Organised and reliable, with a positive attitude
• Comfortable using everyday digital tools (like email, spreadsheets, and online systems)
• Able to work independently and as part of a team
• Open to feedback and willing to grow
