ABOUT BOA HYDRAULICS
BOA Hydraulics is an NZ-owned business working to lift productivity in the primary industry. The problem we're set to solve: 37% of unplanned repairs on hydraulic mobile plant are due to blown hydraulic hoses.
Our answer is the BOApod, a mobile hydraulic hose assembly facility, paired with BOAhub, our digital platform for end-to-end machinery service and maintenance. We're on a steep growth curve — established in Australia, with our sights set on trading globally.
Our team is made up of motivated individuals who challenge the status quo. Everybody in the company has a voice, and no idea is too big or too small.
ABOUT THE ROLE
We are looking for THREE enthusiastic and highly motivated engineering students to join our Research & Development (R&D) team as Summer Interns in Auckland. This is a practical opportunity to work alongside our experienced R&D engineers on real-world projects that involve mechanical design, embedded systems, and software development. The successful candidates will gain valuable industry experience through contributing to the design, prototyping, and testing of innovative hardware solutions, while also exploring the integration of computer vision and machine learning technologies. If you're passionate about building smart systems and eager to apply your engineering knowledge in a dynamic and collaborative environment, we would love to hear from you.
This is a full-time internship, expected to run from mid-November to mid-February (12 Weeks). Exact dates can be discussed based on academic schedules and candidate availability.
Mechatronics intern: hands-on hardware R&D, taking a concept from requirements and feasibility through to a working physical prototype. You'll develop skills in mechatronic and IoT system integration, and in CAD design and rapid prototyping.
Software/AI interns: building internal tools that our business runs on. One role focuses on generative AI application development, the other on full-stack web development, and both work together on the shared data and service layer.
ROLE REQUIREMENTS
Mechatronics role
- Currently pursuing a degree in Mechatronic Engineering (3rd year or above preferred)
- Proficiency in programming languages such as C, C++ or Python
- Solid understanding of the mechanical design process, including prototyping and testing methodologies
- Foundational knowledge of embedded systems (microcontrollers, sensors, communication protocols)
- Familiarity with CAD tools (e.g. SolidWorks, Fusion 360) for mechanical design and documentation
- Bonus: exposure to or interest in computer vision and machine learning concepts or tools
Software/AI roles
- Currently pursuing a degree in Software Engineering, Computer Systems Engineering, Computer Science or a closely related discipline (3rd year or above preferred)
- Strong programming fundamentals, ideally in Python and/or JavaScript/TypeScript
- AI focus: familiarity with LLM APIs, retrieval-augmented generation, embeddings or vector databases — through coursework, personal projects or internships
- Web focus: experience building web applications with a modern framework, and consuming or building REST APIs
- Working knowledge of Git, and comfort with relational databases and SQL
- Bonus: exposure to cloud platforms (AWS), Docker, or data visualisation libraries
Soft skills (all roles)
- Demonstrated ability to think critically and strategically about technical and product challenges
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate technical ideas clearly
- Analytical mindset with the ability to identify and translate business needs into technical requirements
- Self-motivated, adaptable, and eager to learn new skills and technologies in a fast-paced environment
- Proven ability to work collaboratively in a team and take ownership of assigned tasks
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in agile environments, embracing flexibility, collaboration and continuous improvement
Attributes we're looking for
- Ability to set priorities effectively and ensure the order of tasks is understood by other stakeholders
- Able to work through problems logically and methodically
- Actively work with the team to identify ways to increase value
- Able to work independently, with excellent personal organisation and time management
- A great eye for design and high attention to detail
- Demonstrated commitment to your own learning and continuous self-improvement
- Good communication skills, managing expectations through proactive communication with your manager
