For you, this is an exciting opportunity to grow your career, make a meaningful impact, and help shape the future of one of Australia's leading copper businesses.

About Olympic Dam

Olympic Dam is Australia's largest world-class underground mining operations, featuring a highly advanced on-site metallurgical processing plant in South Australia. It offers the opportunity to build a long-term career in a dynamic and future-focused environment.

As part of BHP, you'll work at a large and complex site that produces copper, uranium, gold and silver, using modern technology and innovative practices.

Located approximately 560km north of Adelaide on the traditional lands of the Kokatha, Arabana and Barngarla people, Olympic Dam is a cornerstone asset within BHP's Minerals Australia portfolio, known for its scale, innovation, and strong focus on safety and performance.

With ongoing investment, including over A$840 million in near-term growth capital, you'll have the opportunity to grow your career, develop future-ready skills, and contribute to meeting the world's increasing demand for copper and a more sustainable future.

We currently have a vacancy for a Superintendent Mining Execution, reporting to the Manager Mine Services.

The Challenge Ahead

As Superintendent Mining Execution, you will lead a large and diverse operational team responsible for delivering safe, reliable and efficient underground mining outcomes. This is a key leadership role within one of Australia's most complex underground mining operations, providing leadership across mine services, underground production or underground development execution.

Success in this role will come from your ability to build strong and capable teams, foster trusted relationships across the operation, and drive integrated execution across the underground mine through a strong commitment to safety, performance and continuous improvement.

You will play an important role in shaping culture, developing frontline leadership capability and ensuring the systems, resources and processes are in place to support safe, disciplined and productive mining execution across services, production or development work areas.

In this role, you will:

  • Lead a safety-focused culture built on open communication, visible field leadership and proactive hazard and incident management.
  • Drive high standards of safety performance, including leading serious incident investigations and strengthening investigation capability within frontline leadership teams.
  • Lead and develop a diverse workforce through ongoing coaching, capability building and succession planning.
  • Establish clear operational priorities and align team performance with departmental objectives, customer requirements and BHP Charter Values.
  • Ensure consistent application of mining execution processes, standards and systems that support safe and effective daily operations.
  • Oversee the execution of critical underground work across underground mine services, production or mine development.
  • Build strong partnerships across the mine and broader business to resolve challenges and deliver customer-focused outcomes.
  • Improve operational performance through effective resource planning, workforce utilisation, schedule discipline and execution reliability across underground mining activities.
  • Champion continuous improvement initiatives through BHP Operating System (BOS) practices and routines, with a focus on safety, operational performance, culture and cost efficiency.
  • Ensure material risks are effectively managed through robust critical control execution, verification and compliance practices.

What You'll Bring to the Role

You are an experienced underground mining leader who is passionate about building high-performing teams and creating an environment where people feel valued, respected and safe to speak up. You bring practical leadership experience across Mine Services, underground production or underground development, with the ability to connect teams, remove barriers and deliver safe execution outcomes.

You will bring:

  • Demonstrated leadership experience in an underground mining operation, with the ability to lead and engage large, diverse teams across multiple work groups, shifts and mining disciplines.
  • Required experience across underground Mine Services, Production or Development, including a strong understanding of how each function contributes to safe and reliable mine execution.
  • Experience developing team capability through coaching, mentoring and leadership development.
  • A strong commitment to safety leadership, risk management and critical control effectiveness.
  • Proven ability to influence stakeholders and collaborate across operational and technical teams to achieve shared outcomes.
  • Sound contractor management experience and an understanding of operational performance and service delivery expectations.
  • Strong commercial awareness and a delivery-focused approach to achieving business objectives.
  • Tertiary qualifications in Mining Engineering, Civil Engineering or a related discipline will be highly regarded.
  • A First Class Mine Manager's Certificate of Competency will be advantageous.
  • Mining engineering qualifications or significant operational leadership experience within underground mining environments.
