What they need

Workplace Type: Onsite Newmont produces metals the world needs - safely, responsibly and with care for people, communities and the environment. With a 100+ year history, we continue to shape the future of mining through innovation and strong operational performance. By joining our inclusive, world-class team, you can help shape the future of mining and make a meaningful difference.

Our Lihir Operation, located on the beautiful island of Niolam, approximately 800km north of Papua New Guinea's capital, Port Moresby, is one of the world’s largest gold mines. Set within a geothermically active, extinct volcanic crater, Lihir operates an open-pit mine producing refractory ore, which undergoes pressure oxidation and conventional leaching to recover gold. Our workforce includes both residential and commute rosters, creating a diverse and dynamic team. Lihir offers a range of recreational facilities, including a gym, sports club, restaurant, bar, swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, and a 9-hole golf course. For those who enjoy the outdoors, the Lihir fishing and boating clubs provide access to pristine waters and beaches, while our onsite deli and café serve fresh local and imported produce, barista-made coffee, and freshly baked goods.

We are proud to work closely with the local Lihirian community and value its vibrant culture. Through initiatives like our School to Mine program, we offer meaningful employment, training, and development opportunities for Lihirian men and women, as well as scholarships and vocational apprenticeships. We also partner with the New Ireland Province to ensure economic benefits flow directly to the community, strengthening our commitment to sustainable development and positive local impact.

Your Impact As part of the team, you will lead the delivery of mid- to long-term mine plans that align with production targets, strategic objectives, and regulatory requirements. You will play a critical role in optimising mine design, sequencing, and scheduling to maximise resource recovery and operational efficiency. Working closely with geology, engineering, and operations teams, you will ensure integrated and practical planning outcomes, monitor performance against plan, and implement improvements that enhance productivity, reduce costs, and support safe, reliable mining operations.

As Part Of The Team, You Will

  • Supervise and coordinate mine planning activities to ensure alignment with operational goals
  • Develop and maintain mid- and long-term mine plans, schedules, and forecasts
  • Analyse production data, track performance, and address variances
  • Provide technical guidance and support to the mine planning team
  • Foster collaboration across geology, engineering, and operations functions
  • Identify and drive continuous improvement opportunities in planning processes
  • Manage risk by identifying, assessing, and implementing mitigation strategies
  • Lead and contribute to a positive, productive, and safety-focused team environment

Prerequisites for the Role

  • Degree in Mining Engineering
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in mining operations, preferably in open cut mining
  • Strong knowledge of mine design, scheduling, and forecasting
  • Experience with MinePlan, Deswik, and Modular Mining systems
  • Solid understanding of drill & blast and its impact on load and haul
  • Demonstrated capability in data analysis, performance monitoring, and reporting
  • Sound knowledge of PNG Mine Safety Act and mining safety systems
  • Strong leadership, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a multinational and remote operating environment

Your work environment This role is offered on a 21:21 days only Fly in, Fly out (FIFO) roster to Lihir Island, PNG.

Our FIFO employees stay in a secure and comfortable camp, in an en-suited and airconditioned room equipped with mini fridge, TV and Wi-Fi. A variety of healthy meal options are catered for at our mess; and the wet mess provides a relaxed social setting where employees can unwind with a game of pool or darts.

At Newmont, our people are our strength and we’re committed to a safe, inclusive and supportive workplace. If you’re passionate about doing work that matters, join Newmont and help shape the future of mining.
