This role is responsible for driving supplier performance, quality excellence, and manufacturing readiness across a global supplier base supporting advanced automotive technologies. The Supplier Development Engineer will apply data-driven analysis, structured problem-solving, and automotive core tools to assess supplier performance, mitigate risk, and ensure flawless program launches. This individual will work directly with suppliers and cross-functional Aptiv teams to drive continuous improvement, resolve complex manufacturing challenges, and ensure compliance with automotive quality standards (IATF 16949). The ideal candidate is a highly analytical, results-oriented problem solver who thrives in fast-paced environments, communicates effectively at all organizational levels, and can influence both internal stakeholders and external suppliers. This position requires global travel, often on short notice, to support critical supplier escalations and program milestones. Key Responsibilities
- Evaluate supplier manufacturing performance using data analytics, capacity assessments, and process capability metrics (Cp/Cpk, PPM, yield trends)
- Lead supplier development activities to ensure readiness for product launches, including APQP milestones and PPAP approvals
- Drive root cause analysis and corrective actions using structured methodologies (e.g., Six Sigma, Shainin, 8D, A3)
- Assess and improve supplier manufacturing processes, ensuring robust process controls and error-proofing (poka-yoke)
- Partner with suppliers to implement continuous improvement initiatives focused on quality, cost, and delivery performance
- Lead supplier audits and assessments aligned with IATF 16949 and Aptiv internal standards
- Identify and mitigate supply chain risks, escalating critical issues with clear recovery plans
- Communicate supplier performance, risks, and improvement actions to senior and executive leadership
- Collaborate cross-functionally with engineering, procurement, program management, and operations teams
- Support safe launch planning, run-at-rate validation, and production ramp activities Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical discipline
- Experience in automotive supplier development, supplier quality, or manufacturing engineering within an automotive environment
- Direct experience working with Tier 1 and/or Tier 2 automotive suppliers
- Hands-on experience supporting APQP, PPAP, safe launch, and production readiness activities
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including ability to communicate with executive leadership and suppliers
- Ability to explain complex technical issues in clear, actionable terms
- Strong working knowledge of statistics and data analysis
- Working knowledge of automotive quality systems and standards (IATF 16949, ISO 9001)
- Experience with automotive core tools: DFMEA, PFMEA, Control Plans, SPC, MSA
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications
- Self-motivated with the ability to operate independently in high-pressure situations
- Willingness to travel internationally, sometimes on short notice
- Must have and maintain a valid passport Preferred Qualifications
- 3–10 years of experience in automotive supplier development, supplier quality, or advanced manufacturing engineering
- Experience supporting semiconductor and/or optical/lens components within automotive applications (e.g., ADAS, sensing systems)
- Demonstrated success improving supplier performance through process optimization, yield improvement, and defect reduction initiatives
- Six Sigma Black Belt and/or Shainin Red X Journeyman certification
- Deep knowledge of IATF 16949 requirements, audit processes, and supplier compliance expectations
- Experience leading APQP execution, PPAP submissions, and production part approval with global suppliers
- Experience authoring, reviewing, and maintaining DFMEA and PFMEA documentation
- Demonstrated ability to mentor and develop technical talent
- Proven ability to influence suppliers and drive accountability in challenging situations
- Experience leading cross-functional teams across engineering, procurement, and supplier operations
- Strong problem-solving mindset with a bias for action and sense of urgency
