Wycliffe Associates is a ministry, and our mission of Bible translation is a special calling. Wycliffe Associates trains Christians all over the world to become Bible translators, and we seek to safeguard the integrity of the Scriptures through that process. While specific skills and experience are a major part of this role, what is most important to Wycliffe Associates, and to the Lord, is a person’s heart. The person who fills this role should have a special calling from the Lord for ministry. In this role, you are considered a minister of the gospel. For such a high calling, our lives and values should reflect that pure and holy calling. As we are told in 1 Peter 1: 15-16, “But just as He who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do, for it is written: ‘Be holy, because I am holy.’”

Position Summary The ULB Reviser serves on the ULB Revision Team, responsible for editing, updating, and revising the text of the Unlocked Literal Bible (ULB) so that it can better serve the global church in the work of Bible translation, with the goal of a Bible in every language. Within the revision process defined in the ULB Translation Brief, team members are assigned to specific functions, including the initial revision of an assigned book, independent source review of a book revised by another team member, and, for one team member, documentation and consistency oversight for the project as a whole. Assignments rotate by book and production cycle.

Job Responsibilities The ULB Reviser carries out one or more assigned functions within the ULB revision process, evaluating and proposing wording against the source text and the ULB Translation Brief, the governing standard for this revision. Regardless of assignment, the Reviser documents the rationale for substantive changes and identifies any effect on downstream resources.

Specific Responsibilities Every Reviser is assigned to one or more of the following functions across production cycles.

Initial revision of an assigned book

  • Read the complete assigned book in the existing ULB, and review available evaluations from InterpreSure, alignment data, and other reported issues before beginning revision.
  • Compare the ULB against the American Standard Version, used only as a historical and structural reference, and against the formally approved Hebrew, Aramaic, or Greek source text, which remains the final authority for meaning and textual decisions.
  • For each proposed change, determine what problem exists in the current wording, whether it affects accuracy, transparency, consistency, or comprehensibility, whether the change belongs in the ULB text or in a supporting resource such as Translation Notes, and whether it creates implications elsewhere in the book or affects dependent resources.

Independent review of a book revised by another team member

  • Examine the complete passage against the source text and the ULB Translation Brief, rather than reviewing only the tracked changes proposed by the initial reviser.
  • Classify findings as critical, major, or minor, based on their effect on meaning, consistency, or style.
  • Conduct book-level review for consistency, including names, titles, key terms, discourse markers, recurring grammatical constructions, literary structure, headings, footnotes, and formatting.
  • Participate in corpus-level consistency review at defined points in the production cycle, and in user-testing review of revised passages when needed.

Documentation and consistency oversight (as assigned)

  • Maintain the project's terminology database, English style guide, and corpus-level consistency reports.
  • Identify patterns that require a team decision, and distinguish deliberate variation from accidental inconsistency.
  • Oversee the change log, and identify effects on downstream resources so resource owners receive changes in a usable form.

In every assignment

  • Document every substantive change in the project's structured change log, including the previous wording, the revised wording, the category of change, the rationale, and source-text evidence.
  • Coordinate with other Revisers on the team, and refer disputed textual, exegetical, or terminological questions to the Revision Committee.

Education, Prior Work Experience, And/or Specialized Skills And Knowledge Minimum of a Master's degree in Biblical Languages, Old Testament, New Testament, or a related field, or an equivalent level of training and experience. A Ph.D. is preferred. Demonstrated competence in Hebrew or Greek is required, sufficient to compare the ULB directly against the source text for an assigned Testament; proficiency in both Hebrew and Greek is preferred. Preference also given to candidates with additional training in translation studies or applied linguistics, or with experience using gateway-language resources in field translation work.

Other Qualifications

  • Has a personal, growing relationship with Jesus Christ, and exhibits Christ-like behavior.
  • Must be in full agreement with and abide by the WA Employee Handbook, Statement of Faith and Doctrinal Supplement, Doctrinal Standards for Resource Review, WA Statement on Marriage and Human Sexuality, and Ethical Standards Agreement, as well as other organizational commitments and policies.

Disclaimer Wycliffe Associates makes employment decisions in accordance with applicable federal and state employment laws and regulations. As a religious organization, we are entitled to make employment decisions on the basis of religious beliefs and practices of the applicant or employee.
