What they need

Job Overview

We are seeking a passionate and dedicated Support Worker to join our team, committed to making a positive difference in the lives of children and young people. As part of the residential team, you’ll support children in a safe, caring and structured environment. The role involves building positive relationships with the child, supporting day-to-day routines, encouraging independence, and working alongside colleagues to provide consistent care.

About the home

  • A small children’s residential home in Birmingham
  • Registered for two children, currently supporting one child
  • Specialist provision for children with learning disabilities
  • A stable, consistent team, where continuity for the child really matters

Duties

  • Assist children and young people with daily routines, including personal care, meal preparation, and recreational activities
  • Support emotional well-being by offering encouragement, active listening, and positive reinforcement
  • Providing safe, caring and consistent day-to-day support in line with the child’s care plan
  • Building a positive, appropriate and trusting relationship with the child
  • Supporting daily routines, activities, appointments and education
  • Encouraging independence and helping the child develop new skills
  • Adapting your communication and approach to the child’s learning disability and individual needs
  • Keeping clear, accurate records and contributing to handovers
  • Following safeguarding, health and safety and home policies at all times
  • Working as part of a small team to keep care consistent

Experience:

Previous children’s residential or learning disability experience is an advantage but not essential. The right attitude, reliability and willingness to learn matter most.

Qualifications

  • Experience working with children or young people in a caring or educational setting is highly desirable
  • Strong mentoring skills with the ability to inspire confidence and motivate others
  • Knowledge of teaching methods suitable for children’s developmental needs
  • Excellent communication skills to effectively engage with children, families, and team members
  • Compassionate attitude with a genuine desire to support others’ growth and well-being
  • Ability to work flexibly across shifts, including evenings or weekends if required
  • Relevant qualifications or training in childcare, education, or social care are advantageous but not mandatory

A full UK driving licence is preferred. Strong non-driving candidates may still be considered.

Pay: £12.71-£13.25 per hour
