What they need

We are Helsinki Shipyard, a world leader in building ships for the world’s toughest waters. With more than 160 years of shipbuilding expertise in the heart of Helsinki, we design and build highly specialized vessels for government and commercial customers around the world. While our icebreakers and coast guard vessels have attracted significant attention recently, our expertise extends well beyond. Cruise ships, passenger vessels and yachts are exciting segments where our long shipbuilding heritage, engineering expertise and craftsmanship come together.

We are part of Inocea, an international marine industrial group with five shipyards across three countries: two in Finland, one in Canada, and two in the United States. Helsinki Shipyard plays a significant role in this entity as a centre of excellence for ship design and Arctic technology.

Today, we are a team of more than 600 people, and we are growing rapidly.

Your role

We are looking for a System Designer to join our team of 20 interior designers. Our Interior Designers work across many different areas, including cabins, public areas, crew quarters, galleys, stairs, and elevators. The team typically works on 2–3 ship projects simultaneously.

The Interior Design Architect designs the layouts, and you, as a System Designer, are responsible for the technical systems—for example, doors, floors, insulation, walls, and ceilings. You prepare system drawings and documentation according to project schedules and ensure compliance with relevant rules and approvals. You take technical ownership of system(s), ensuring designs meet specifications while remaining cost‑effective and production‑friendly. You work in close co-operation with material suppliers. You maintain correct system data in the shipyard’s material system and support detail design.

What will you be working on?

Depending on the project, your tasks may include:

  • Designing and developing technical interior systems, such as doors, floors, insulation, walls, and ceilings
  • Preparing system drawings, technical specifications, and documentation according to project schedules
  • Ensuring that designs comply with applicable rules, regulations, and approval requirements
  • Taking technical responsibility for assigned systems and ensuring that solutions are cost-effective and suitable for production
  • Collaborating closely with material suppliers on technical solutions and specifications
  • Maintaining accurate system and material information in the shipyard’s material management system
  • Supporting detail design and working closely with interior designers and other engineering disciplines

What are we looking for?

You could be a good fit for the role if you have:

  • Have a technical background (B.Sc. or M.Sc.) in engineering
  • Have experience in AutoCAD and 3D design
  • Experience in technical design and technical Handling
  • A practical, solution-oriented approach to your work
  • Fluent English skills and the ability to collaborate effectively in an international environment
  • Experience from the marine industry or shipbuilding especially on passenger vessels is appreciated but not mandatory,
  • Excellent English skills are necessary as we have international colleagues, clients and suppliers.
  • An ideal candidate would be a team-player with good social skills and a go-getter attitude. Being organized and having the ability to prioritize will help you to succeed in this role.

Why Helsinki Shipyard?

At Helsinki Shipyard, design and production take place at the same shipyard. This means you will not only work with drawings and models – you will also get to see how your work becomes part of a real vessel.

📍 Our offices are located in Helsinki, Turku and Pori. We support flexible hybrid working, while also working together at the office on a weekly basis.
