Systems Analyst / Systems Consultant / Systems Administrator

Role Description

Analyzes, supports, and improves the information systems an organization uses to run its operations. Works with users and business teams to understand needs, investigate system issues, and identify opportunities to improve processes, applications, and technology services. Helps ensure that systems are reliable, secure, usable, and aligned with business requirements.

A Systems Analyst focuses on understanding business needs and translating them into system requirements. This may include documenting current processes, gathering user requirements, analyzing workflows, preparing functional specifications, and coordinating with developers or vendors on system changes. The analyst may also support testing, user acceptance, implementation, and training.

A Systems Consultant advises clients or internal stakeholders on system selection, design, implementation, and improvement. This may involve assessing existing technology, recommending solutions, configuring platforms, coordinating implementation projects, and helping users adopt new systems. Consultants often work across several teams or organizations and may provide specialized expertise in a particular platform or industry.

A Systems Administrator maintains and supports the day-to-day operation of computer systems, servers, networks, user accounts, and related services. Responsibilities may include configuring systems, managing access, monitoring performance, applying updates, backing up data, troubleshooting incidents, and supporting security controls. Administrators coordinate with infrastructure, security, service desk, and application teams to keep services available and resolve technical issues.

Across these roles, responsibilities may include maintaining system documentation, coordinating with technology vendors, monitoring system performance, supporting audits, and following change-management procedures. The balance of analysis, consulting, implementation, and operational support depends on the position and organization.

Qualifications

• Diploma or bachelor’s degree in information technology, computer science, information systems, or a related field; equivalent experience may be considered
• Experience in systems analysis, IT consulting, systems administration, application support, or a related technology role
• Understanding of system lifecycles, business processes, technical documentation, and change-management practices
• Ability to investigate problems, identify likely causes, and communicate clear next steps
• Familiarity with operating systems, applications, databases, networks, or cloud services relevant to the role
• For analyst roles, experience gathering requirements, mapping workflows, writing specifications, and coordinating testing is an asset
• For consultant roles, experience advising users, implementing solutions, configuring platforms, or managing technology projects is beneficial
• For administrator roles, experience managing user access, system updates, backups, monitoring, and technical incidents is beneficial
• Familiarity with security principles, access controls, data protection, and IT service practices
• Strong documentation, organization, and communication skills
• Ability to explain technical information to users with different levels of technical knowledge
• Service-oriented approach and ability to collaborate with colleagues, vendors, and clients
• Relevant platform certifications or qualifications in areas such as cloud, networking, cybersecurity, or IT service management are an asset
