Role Purpose and Position Scope

The Tactical Buyer supports the Senior Buyer and Supply Chain Manager by executing day-to-day purchasing activities and keeping orders, supplier commitments, and purchasing records current. This role processes production material orders and maintenance, repair, and operations (MRO) purchases, including tools, supplies, equipment, and services needed to keep the business operating.

The Tactical Buyer coordinates with Planning, Production, Maintenance, Facilities, Quality, Receiving, and Finance to resolve routine purchasing issues, follow up on deliveries, and support material availability. The role supports sourcing and cost-reduction work led by the Senior Buyer and escalates issues requiring strategic negotiation, supplier development, or contract changes.

Initial expectations include learning company purchasing procedures, approval requirements, and ERP transactions, and demonstrating reliable execution of assigned purchasing activities within the first 90 days.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review approved requisitions and validated MRP requirements; prepare and issue purchase orders within assigned approval authority and company procedures.
  • Process routine production material orders using approved suppliers, current pricing, and established purchasing agreements. Verify part numbers, revisions, quantities, delivery dates, ship-to details, and required order documentation.
  • Purchase MRO items and services, including maintenance parts, tools, consumables, safety supplies, facility supplies, equipment, and approved outside services. Confirm specifications, required dates, and appropriate approvals with the requesting department.
  • Obtain and compare quotations for routine purchases, considering price, availability, freight, lead time, and total cost. Negotiate routine pricing and delivery terms within delegated authority and refer significant commercial changes to the Senior Buyer or Supply Chain Manager.
  • Obtain supplier order acknowledgments and maintain accurate pricing, lead times, and promised delivery dates in the ERP system. Identify and resolve differences between the purchase order and supplier acknowledgment.
  • Monitor open purchase orders, follow up on overdue orders, expedite shortages, and communicate supplier delivery changes to the appropriate internal teams. Track recovery commitments and escalate risks to production or maintenance needs.
  • Execute approved MRP action messages, including order placement, rescheduling, and cancellation. Coordinate questionable demand or order changes with Planning before taking action.
  • Coordinate with Receiving and Quality on receipt discrepancies, damaged or nonconforming material, supplier returns, RMAs, replacements, and credits. Track issues through closure.
  • Resolve routine purchase order, receipt, and invoice discrepancies with suppliers and Finance. Maintain records of pricing changes, credits, and other agreed adjustments.
  • Maintain complete purchasing records, supplier contacts, order correspondence, and supporting documents in approved systems. Keep records accurate and accessible to the team.
  • Support the Senior Buyer by gathering quotations, purchase history, supplier delivery information, and other data needed for sourcing, supplier reviews, and cost-reduction initiatives.
  • Identify opportunities to consolidate routine purchases, use preferred suppliers, and reduce unnecessary freight or repeat emergency orders. Coordinate recurring MRO needs with the requesting departments.
  • Follow company purchasing, quality, export control, and records requirements. Comply with Canyon AeroConnect SHE policies and the Code of Business Conduct and Ethics.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the manager.

Core Competencies

  • Working knowledge of purchase orders, requisitions, supplier acknowledgments, receiving, and invoice reconciliation.
  • Basic understanding of ERP purchasing functions and MRP action messages; ability to maintain accurate system records.
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, follow-through, and ability to manage multiple daily priorities.
  • Clear communication with suppliers and internal customers; willingness to ask questions and escalate issues promptly.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and routine data entry and reporting.
  • Ability to compare quotations, recognize discrepancies, and apply sound judgment within established procedures.

Qualifications and Working Authority

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE – High school diploma or equivalent and at least two years of related purchasing, procurement coordination, materials, or supply chain experience. An equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be considered.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE – Experience purchasing MRO supplies or services, working in a manufacturing environment, and using an ERP purchasing system. Aerospace or defense experience is a plus.

DISCRETION AND LATITUDE – Works within established purchasing procedures and approval limits. Independently manages routine orders and supplier follow-up. Receives guidance on unfamiliar transactions and escalates material shortages, significant price increases, supplier performance concerns, and requests to change contractual terms.

Key Measures and Milestones

  • Timely processing of approved requisitions and accurate purchase orders against established turnaround targets.
  • Current supplier acknowledgments, promised dates, and open-order records.
  • Timely follow-up and escalation of overdue orders, shortages, and delivery risks.
  • Completion of assigned MRP actions within agreed priorities and timelines.
  • Timely closure of receipt discrepancies, RMAs, invoice differences, and supplier credits.
