What they need

Job Overview

40 hours per week throughout the year, including tax season. No additional tax-season hours are required.

We are hiring a Tax Manager to review returns and support tax planning for construction contractors and their owners. Compensation will reflect your experience and ability to independently review work, supervise preparers, and resolve technical issues.

Bryan N Allen CPA LLC is a CPA firm serving construction contractors and their owners. This role combines technical tax review, tax planning, staff supervision, client communication, and tax notice resolution.

Work Arrangements

  • Full-time, year-round position with a 40-hour workweek, including tax season.
  • 100% Remote. We have a Crofton, MD office that you can work in if you prefer to work on-site. The position does not require any in-office work.

Responsibilities

  • Review federal and state individual, S corporation, C corporation, and partnership returns for construction contractors and their owners, including Forms 1040, 1120S, 1120, and 1065.
  • Review supporting workpapers and book-to-tax reconciliations. Evaluate construction accounting methods, WIP-related tax adjustments, owner basis, loss limitations, and the flow of entity information to individual returns.
  • Write clear review notes, discuss corrections with preparers, and verify that issues are resolved before returns are released.
  • Supervise tax preparers, prioritize assignments and deadlines, provide technical guidance, and help improve the quality and consistency of their work.
  • Resolve IRS and state tax notices by researching discrepancies, preparing responses and support, coordinating appropriate authorizations, and tracking matters through resolution.
  • Review tax planning and projections for construction contractors and their owners, including assumptions, estimated payments, entity and individual tax effects, and planning recommendations.
  • Coordinate with specialty tax firm subcontractors, primarily for R&D tax credit and cost segregation studies. Review study results, reconcile them to client records, and oversee their incorporation into returns and projections.
  • Research technical questions and explain conclusions and requested information clearly to clients, preparers, specialty firms, and firm management.

Required qualifications

Construction contractor tax review experience is required. Candidates must have substantive experience reviewing all four return types (1040, 1120S, 1065 and 1120) related to construction contractor businesses and their owners.

Qualifications include:

  • Strong federal and state tax knowledge relevant to closely held construction businesses and their owners.
  • Ability to review planning and projections, research tax questions, manage competing deadlines, and communicate practical conclusions.
  • Strong organization, clear written review notes, and the ability to work independently while remaining responsive to the team and clients.
  • Ability to work effectively in a remote environment and protect confidential client information.
  • At least 5 years of tax experience in a public accounting firm, including at least 1 year reviewing tax returns prepared by others.
  • Ability to identify technical and workpaper issues, guide preparers through corrections, and recognize issues requiring further research or escalation.
  • Familiarity with Maryland, District of Columbia, and Virginia tax matters, along with general knowledge of multistate taxation.
  • Experience with CCH ProSystem fx Tax or CCH Axcess Tax is preferred.
