Tax Manager (US) (Full-Time Contractor)

Location: Remote (open to candidates in any geography)

Engagement: Full-time (40 hrs/week), independent contractor

Compensation: $17/hour (~$2850-$3120/month, R47,130 - R51,595/month)

Type: Contractor

Timezone: 9AM-5PM EST

ABOUT THE CLIENT

The client is a boutique tax and advisory firm based in New Jersey, serving entrepreneurs, privately held businesses, and high-net-worth households across the NY/NJ metro area and nationally. They combine Big Four technical experience with boutique-firm responsiveness: proactive, year-round tax planning and advisory rather than compliance-only service. They are a two-partner firm building out our systems and team, and this is their first full-time hire.

ROLE SUMMARY

We are hiring an experienced US tax professional to run tax production for the firm and operate as a true extension of the partner team. This is a management-track role, not a preparer seat. You will own the tax workflow day to day, perform first-level technical review so partner review is a final sign-off, oversee the bookkeeping workstream that feeds the returns, and help build the systems, standards, and team that support our growth. This is the first seat on our team, and the person in it is who we will build the team under.

The role is year-round. Compliance peaks seasonally, but planning, projections, and review work for our advisory clients runs all twelve months.

Tax technical depth is the priority. Bookkeeping and financial reporting are part of the role, but we are hiring first for someone who knows US individual and pass-through taxation well enough to catch issues, explain them, and fix them without a partner rebuilding the work.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

Tax (primary focus)

  • Prepare and perform first-level review of complex individual (1040) and pass-through (1065, 1120-S) returns, plus 1120 and 1041 as needed, including multi-state filings (NJ/NY and others)

  • Work through the technical issues that drive our client base: partner and shareholder basis, at-risk and passive activity limitations, QBI, depreciation (bonus, §179, cost segregation), S corp reasonable compensation, NIIT, and state sourcing and PTET

  • Own the return workflow in UltraTax and TaxDome from organizer through e-file, including extensions, estimated payments, and tie-out to source documents and workpapers

  • Build and review tax projections, estimated-payment calculations, and planning analyses ahead of partner planning calls

  • Research technical questions and draft concise written positions for partner sign-off

  • Prepare first drafts of IRS and state notice responses

Management and partner support

  • Run the firm's production calendar: deadlines, extensions, status tracking, and capacity planning

  • Review the work of preparers and bookkeepers as the team grows, with clear, actionable feedback

  • Build and maintain review checklists, workpaper standards, and SOPs so quality doesn't depend on any one person

  • Act as the partners' day-to-day operational counterpart: join planning meetings, surface issues early, and bring recommendations, not just questions

  • Communicate directly with clients on document requests and routine tax matters; escalate judgment calls to the partners

  • Design efficient workflows across tax and accounting so the firm can add team members under this role

  • Help refine firm systems and templates (TaxDome pipelines, workpaper templates, client organizers) and onboard and train future hires

Bookkeeping and financial reporting

  • Oversee monthly bookkeeping, write-up, and month-end close for retainer clients (bank and credit card reconciliations, GL maintenance, financial statement preparation), doing the work directly or reviewing it as the team grows

  • Ensure year-end books tie to the returns, including book-to-tax adjustments and clean trial balances

  • Support ad hoc financial analysis and client deliverables

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

3–5 years of US tax experience preparing and reviewing individual and business returns for a US CPA firm, accounting firm, or offshore firm serving US CPA clients (including Big Four or US tax outsourcing centers), with time in a senior, reviewer, or supervisory role

  • Strong technical command of individual and pass-through taxation (basis, at-risk, passive loss rules, QBI, depreciation, partnership allocations, S corp compensation) and multi-state filing

  • Proven ability to review others' work, own a deadline calendar, and deliver review-ready returns with minimal partner rework

Working knowledge of tax-basis and GAAP-basis bookkeeping and the year-end close process

  • Excellent written and spoken English; comfortable leading video calls with partners and clients

  • QuickBooks Online required; UltraTax CS strongly preferred; TaxDome preferred (training available)

  • Reliable high-speed internet and a professional, distraction-free home office

  • At least 4 hours of daily overlap with US Eastern Time, with extended overlap during peak filing periods

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • US CPA or Enrolled Agent (held or in progress), or a local qualification such as CA (SA) or CA (India)

  • Experience with high-net-worth individuals, business owners, real estate holdings, and multi-entity groups

  • Experience building tax projections and supporting proactive planning engagements

  • Prior experience leading, training, or reviewing a remote team for a US firm

  • Familiarity with US payroll and sales tax compliance

YOUR FIRST 90 DAYS

  • Weeks 1–4 (working trial): Prepare and self-review a set of returns and bookkeeping files to a review-ready standard and learn our systems

  • Weeks 5–8: Take over first-level review and the production calendar for a defined client group, own extension and estimate tracking, and begin overseeing bookkeeping

  • Weeks 9–12: Run tax production day to day with partners reviewing final returns only; deliver a weekly status update and propose improvements to our review checklist and workflow
