Teacher Assistant

Duties

• Assist teachers in implementing curriculum plans aligned with state standards such as the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) and individualized education programs (IEPs) for students with disabilities.
• Provide direct support to students with special needs, including those with autism spectrum disorders, behavioral disorders, and developmental disabilities, through behavior management strategies and physical assistance when necessary.
• Support classroom management by maintaining a positive learning environment, encouraging appropriate behavior, and implementing behavior support plans.
• Facilitate communication using American Sign Language (ASL) or other augmentative communication methods for students with communication challenges.
• Assist with lesson planning, literacy education, math instruction, and curriculum development tailored to diverse learner needs.
• Support classroom activities in preschool, toddler care, Montessori settings, or early childhood classrooms by providing childcare and developmental support.
• Collaborate effectively with teachers, therapists, counselors, and other professionals to develop strategies that enhance student engagement and progress while handling confidential information responsibly.

Qualifications

• Experience working with children in educational or childcare settings, especially within special education or early childhood environments such as preschool or toddler care.
• Knowledge of childhood development principles, classroom management techniques, and behavior management strategies for students with disabilities.
• Familiarity with special education laws including IEP processes and accommodations for students on the autism spectrum or with behavioral disorders.
• Proficiency in basic math skills and literacy education methods suitable for early learners.
• Ability to communicate effectively using verbal skills and American Sign Language; strong writing skills are also valued.
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within a team of educators and support staff to develop inclusive lesson plans and classroom routines.
• Compassionate attitude towards working with students who have disabilities or special needs; patience and adaptability are essential qualities for success in this role.
