About the Role
Are you a passionate and resilient Teaching Assistant looking for an opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of young people? We are currently recruiting for a dedicated Teaching Assistant to work within a Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) in Sheffield, supporting pupils who require additional behavioural, emotional and educational support outside of mainstream education.
This is an excellent opportunity for an enthusiastic Learning Support Assistant, Behaviour Support Assistant or SEN Teaching Assistant who is committed to helping pupils overcome barriers to learning, develop confidence and achieve positive educational outcomes.
Working alongside experienced teachers and pastoral staff, you will provide classroom support, encourage positive behaviour and help create a safe, structured and inclusive learning environment for pupils with a range of additional needs.
Key Responsibilities
Provide one-to-one and small-group support to pupils across the Pupil Referral Unit.
Assist teachers in delivering engaging lessons and adapting learning activities to meet individual needs.
Support pupils with social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs, behavioural difficulties and additional learning requirements.
Promote positive behaviour management strategies and encourage pupils to engage with their education.
Build positive, trusting relationships with pupils, acting as a consistent and supportive role model.
Help manage challenging behaviour using calm, patient and proactive de-escalation techniques.
Support pupils in developing their social skills, emotional regulation, confidence and independence.
Work collaboratively with teachers, SENCOs, pastoral teams and other professionals to support individual learning and behaviour plans.
Maintain a safe, supportive and positive classroom environment.
Monitor pupil progress, engagement and wellbeing, reporting concerns to the appropriate staff.
Follow safeguarding procedures and contribute to the protection and welfare of children and young people.
The Ideal Teaching Assistant
- We are looking for a candidate who is passionate about supporting vulnerable young people and understands the importance of patience, consistency and positive relationships in education.
The successful candidate will ideally have:
Previous experience working as a Teaching Assistant, Learning Support Assistant, SEN Teaching Assistant, Behaviour Mentor or Youth Support Worker.
Experience supporting children or young people with challenging behaviour, SEMH needs, SEND or additional learning needs.
A positive, resilient and flexible approach to supporting pupils who may have experienced difficulties within mainstream education.
Strong behaviour management, communication and relationship-building skills.
The ability to remain calm and professional in challenging situations.
A genuine commitment to safeguarding, inclusion and improving outcomes for young people.
The ability to work effectively as part of a team while also using initiative.
A relevant teaching assistant, childcare, education or youth work qualification would be advantageous but is not essential, depending on the needs of the setting.
Candidates with experience in alternative provision, pupil referral units, special educational needs schools, mainstream secondary schools, residential childcare or youth services are particularly encouraged to apply.
