Teaching Assistant

Job Summary
PS 84 is seeking dedicated and compassionate Teaching Assistants to support classrooms in Kindergarten, 1st Grade, and 2nd Grade starting this September. Teaching Assistants play a key role in creating a supportive, safe, and engaging environment for our youngest learners.

Please note: This is not a Department of Education position. Teaching Assistants are fully funded by the PS 84 PTA.

Responsibilities

Instructional Support

• Assist the classroom teacher in implementing lesson plans and delivering instruction.
• Work with students in small groups or one-on-one for enrichment or intervention.
• Lead morning meetings and support classroom routines.
• Prepare and organize instructional materials and resources.

Student Supervision

• Monitor students during lunch, recess, and transitions throughout the school day.
• Promote a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment at all times.
• Support students with social-emotional and behavioral needs.

Classroom & Clerical Support

• Take attendance and maintain accurate classroom records.
• Prepare, photocopy, and distribute learning materials.
• Organize supplies and update bulletin boards to reflect current learning themes.
• Maintain student files and assist with light clerical duties.

Behavioral Support

• Help implement positive behavior plans and interventions.
• Reinforce classroom expectations and model respectful interactions.

Movement & Engagement

• Lead structured movement breaks to help students stay focused and engaged.
• Support classroom events and school-wide activities.
• Work with students in small groups or one-on-one for enrichment or intervention.
• Lead morning meetings and support classroom routines.
• Prepare and organize instructional materials and resources.

Qualifications:

• High school diploma or equivalent (Associate’s degree or higher preferred)
• Experience working with young children in a school or childcare setting
• Strong communication and teamwork skills
• Patience, flexibility, and a commitment to nurturing young learners
• Ability to manage multiple tasks and respond to children’s needs with care and attentiveness

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to stand, walk, and sit for extended periods
• Capability to lift and move classroom materials
• Comfort supervising students in both indoor and outdoor settings

• Child Development Knowledge – Understanding of early childhood and elementary-age learning needs
• Classroom Management – Ability to support a structured, calm, and engaging classroom environment
• Communication – Strong verbal and written communication skills with children and adults

• Technology Literacy – Comfortable using basic educational technology (e.g., tablets, smartboards, photocopiers)
