What they need

  • Make a difference by teaching and mentoring a whānau group of up to 25 ākonga as they begin their university journey.
  • Create a culturally rich and inspiring learning environment grounded in manaakitanga, whanaungatanga, and kaitiakitanga.
  • Casual, hourly paid appointment based at AUT's South Campus during the summer.

Auckland University of Technology (AUT) is New Zealand's newest university and one of its most distinctive. Centred on students and grounded in knowledge that works, AUT is 5-star rated by QS, with more than 27,000 students and 4,000 staff based primarily across three Auckland campuses. It's a place of real opportunity, where the values of Pono, Tika and Aroha shape how talented, progressive people work together – and you'll feel that in the culture, in the collaboration and in the difference the work makes for students, communities and the world.

Our community is stronger because of the role Te Tiriti plays in how we operate, and because Māori and Pacific knowledge, leadership and contribution are central to who we are. We embrace diversity in all its forms and are proud to welcome people of all ethnicities, genders, sexual orientations, religious and political beliefs, socio-economic situations and accessibility needs.

The Opportunity | Te Whiwhinga mahi

AUT is excited to announce that we are recruiting Teaching Assistants (TAs) for UniPrep/Uni 101 2027 at AUT’s South Campus! The role is intended to run from 11 January to 19 February 2027, requiring approximately 26 hours per week. TAs will also be invited to two-days of whakawhanaungatanga in early December 2026 to meet the entire UniPrep programme team.

Teaching Assistants will be responsible for teaching and mentoring a whānau group of 25 ākonga – high school leavers, primarily Māori and Pacific from the Tāmaki Makaurau region, who are beginning their university journey. TAs will foster a culturally affirming and inspiring learning environment that:

  • Honours Te Tiriti o Waitangi and Te Aronui (AUT's Te Tiriti framework), while centring knowledge and practice from across Te Moana-nui-a-Kiwa.
  • Supports a sense of belonging, wellbeing, and academic confidence for ākonga as they transition into university life.

This role requires the successful delivery of culturally enriching tutorials using the material prepared for UniPrep/Uni101 under the mentorship of Dr. Jessica Worchel, the Uni101 Course Lead. TAs are responsible for ensuring students are clearly aware of learning outcomes and assessment requirements and are meeting the requirements of the paper as well as mentoring students on their academic journey through the creation of a university transition success plan.
