About the role

Our client is looking for a Tech Lead to join one of Portugal’s most exciting B2B platform startups. You’ll be joining a team with a strong engineering culture, high standards for product quality, and a genuine focus on solving problems the right way.

This role is ideal for a Senior Engineer or Tech Lead looking to take the next step towards Engineering Management. You’ll play an important role in keeping engineering and product aligned, helping teams prioritise and coordinate work when several initiatives are running in parallel.

While the position includes leadership responsibilities across the team, delivery, and engineering processes, it remains a highly technical role. You’ll stay close to the codebase, developing features, reviewing code, investigating complex technical problems, contributing to architectural decisions, and improving platform reliability and performance.

We’re looking for someone who can support engineers through difficult technical challenges, provide clear technical direction, and help maintain high standards across scalability, maintainability, and overall engineering quality.

You’ll have ownership over both project delivery and technical direction. The team is also building new products and features using generative AI, LLM-based systems, and other emerging technologies, giving you the opportunity to help shape solutions from an early stage.

The stack includes Ruby, React, PostgreSQL, Elasticsearch, and Redis. Previous experience with this exact stack is not required, but you should be comfortable working across modern backend and web technologies and learning new tools when needed.

Key Responsibilities

• Work closely with senior leadership to help define priorities, delivery plans, and technical strategy.
• Coordinate effectively across engineering and product, ensuring teams remain aligned when multiple initiatives are progressing at the same time.
• Take ownership of new technical initiatives, helping design and develop products and features involving generative AI and LLM-based technologies.
• Provide technical guidance, coaching, and support to engineers across the team.
• Help structure engineering planning and delivery processes to maintain a consistent standard of execution.
• Remain actively involved in engineering work, including implementation, code reviews, troubleshooting, and solving complex technical challenges.
• Participate in growing the engineering team, from defining hiring needs through to interviewing and selecting candidates.
• Help engineers develop their skills through regular feedback, coaching, and opportunities to take on greater responsibility.
• Contribute to improvements in engineering practices, internal processes, and ways of working across the wider organization.

Required Qualifications

• 7+ years of professional software engineering experience, with previous experience in a Tech Lead, Lead Engineer, Staff Engineer, or similar role.
• Strong hands-on engineering background and confidence working directly with code, architecture, debugging, and code reviews.
• Experience taking ownership of technical decisions and balancing delivery speed with scalability, maintainability, and reliability.
• Experience mentoring engineers, providing technical guidance, and helping others grow in their roles.
• Proven ability to work closely with product and other stakeholders to translate business needs into clear technical priorities.
• Experience coordinating engineering work across multiple projects or initiatives and supporting consistent, high-quality delivery.
• Solid understanding of modern software engineering practices, including testing, observability, performance, and production reliability.
• Strong written and verbal English communication skills, with an interest in growing into broader engineering leadership while remaining technically involved.

Note: The role is remote and open across the EU/US/LATAM, but considering the team's location, there's a strong preference for a EU-based candidate.
