Technical Architect

A leading mixed-use development company is seeking a Director, Technical Quality to provide senior-level technical oversight across a diverse portfolio of commercial, mixed-use, retail, repositioning, and tenant improvement projects.

This role will serve as a key technical resource, focusing on architectural drawing and construction document review, quality control, constructability, code compliance, and construction administration. The Director will identify coordination issues, technical gaps, and potential cost impacts before they reach the field, while also supporting project teams throughout construction.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct expert-level review of architectural drawings and construction documents across new development, repositioning, tenant fit-out, and landlord projects.
• Review for constructability, interdisciplinary coordination, code compliance, accessibility, and cost/value-engineering considerations.
• Identify drawing conflicts, omissions, and potential issues before construction to help minimize change orders and protect project budgets.
• Support RFI, submittal, shop drawing, and construction administration review, including occasional site visits.
• Review tenant fit-out and shop drawings for technical accuracy and code compliance.
• Develop and maintain technical review standards, checklists, and quality-control processes across the portfolio.
• Capture lessons learned and help improve technical processes and documentation over time.
• Provide technical input during acquisition due diligence and assist with evaluating emerging drawing-review technologies.
• Partner closely with project, development, construction, and tenant construction teams on technical issues and coordination.
• Mentor junior and intermediate staff, helping strengthen their technical review and CA capabilities.

Ideal Background

• 15+ years of experience in architecture, with significant experience in a senior technical role such as Senior Project Architect, Technical Director, or CA specialist.
• Strong ability to read, evaluate, and mark up complete architectural drawing sets.
• Deep understanding of coordination between architectural, structural, MEP, civil, and specialty systems.
• Strong knowledge of building codes, accessibility requirements, and commercial construction.
• Extensive construction administration experience, including RFIs, submittals, shop drawings, and field observation.
• Experience with retail, mixed-use, and/or commercial projects strongly preferred.
• Licensed architect preferred; significant technical project architect or CA experience will also be considered.
• Proficiency with AutoCAD, Bluebeam, Procore, and other construction administration platforms.
• Highly detail-oriented, organized, collaborative, and comfortable managing multiple projects and timelines.
