Technical Director – Ecology

Pattle Delamore Partners Limited (PDP) is a leading environmental and engineering consultancy with a strong presence across Aotearoa New Zealand. For nearly 40 years, we have partnered with clients, iwi, and communities to solve complex challenges across air, land, and water, delivering practical solutions that stand the test of time.

We are looking for a highly motivated and skilled Freshwater Ecologist who is ready to take the next step in their career. This is an opportunity to help lead and grow a thriving ecology practice, influence nationally significant projects, and work alongside some of New Zealand's most respected environmental scientists and engineers.

The role will ideally be based in our Christchurch office; however, we are also open to applicants based in Napier, Tauranga or Wellington. The right person will join a collaborative national ecology team and play a key role in shaping the future direction of PDP's ecological services.

What you’ll do

As a senior member of our ecology team, you’ll:

• Lead and deliver freshwater ecology projects across New Zealand.
• Provide technical leadership and mentorship to a team of talented ecologists and environmental scientists.
• Help grow and shape PDP's ecology services and strategic direction.
• Work on a diverse range of projects, from infrastructure and urban development to restoration, water management, and environmental planning.
• Collaborate closely with our hydrology, hydrogeology, water resources, engineering, and environmental planning specialists to deliver integrated solutions for our clients.
• Build strong relationships with clients, iwi, regulators, and project partners.

What we are looking for

You'll be a passionate ecologist with strong technical expertise, leadership capability, and a desire to make a positive impact. Whether your background is primarily freshwater ecology, aquatic ecology, or broader ecosystem assessment and management, you'll bring the experience, credibility, and enthusiasm to help grow our team and deliver outstanding outcomes for clients and communities.

If you're looking for a role where you can lead, influence, and help shape the future of freshwater management in New Zealand, we'd love to hear from you.

Why PDP?

• A leadership role with influence over technical direction and business growth.
• Meaningful work with real environmental outcomes.
• A nationally connected team that values collaboration over silos.
• Opportunities to lead, innovate, and influence the growth of our ecology practice.
• The chance to work alongside experts across ecology, hydrology, hydrogeology, environmental planning, engineering, and water science.

We also offer:

• Flexible and hybrid working arrangements that support work and personal commitments.

• A comprehensive benefits package, including health insurance, income protection, parental leave salary top ups, and the option to purchase additional annual leave.

• Ongoing professional development, including funded training, education, and professional membership fees.

• An inclusive workplace that values different perspectives and supports people to do their best work.
