Job Title: Technical Editor

Salary: £15,900 (£26,500 full time equivalent)

Working pattern: 21 hours per week/3 days per week

Magazine: Simply Knitting and The Knitter

Company description

Our Media is a leading special-interest content business, based in the buzzing, creative city of Bristol. We're home to market-leading brands in craft, science, nature, homes and music.

We help our audiences pursue their passions through highly trusted, original content - in print, video and online. Our much-loved brands include BBC Science Focus, BBC Wildlife Magazine, YourHome, Gathered, Gardens Illustrated and Homes & Antiques.

We also have teams working with major charities, brands and membership organisations to help them tell their stories and engage audiences better - in print, video, and online

Position

The role of the Technical Editor is to provide a foundation of technical accuracy, overseeing the technical process from checking patterns and sending out patterns to external checkers, to writing project instructions and technical features. The role ensures that projects are ready for photography, and that patterns are completed on time and in line with the magazine style.

The Technical Editor should balance the needs of both magazines. They report to the Editor and are responsible for managing the workload alongside the other Technical Editor.

Responsibilities

General Tasks:

  • Plan pattern checking for each issue of both magazines (including supplements), dividing workload between yourself, the Technical Editor, and external checkers.
  • Ensure all pattern text, schematics and walkthrough components are present at the beginning of each issue, liaising with the team where necessary.
  • Ensure projects are ready for photography, working with the Editor.
  • Keep track of costs on server cost sheet and process costs through Impress.
  • Answer reader queries by phone or by email.
  • When magazines have gone to press, send sample work back to contributors.
  • Keep orderly project boxes/drawers so that projects are easy for the team to find when you are not in the office.
  • Maintain an organised file-keeping system.
  • Help with creation of knitting videos for the yarn editorial teams (for social media and www.simply-yarn.com).

Page Production:

  • Using InDesign to flow patterns onto page and put into magazine style, placing all measurements, instructions and shopping lists, walkthroughs and tips onto a blank project document for the Operations Editor and Deputy Editor.
  • Use the magazine server in conjunction with the magazine's job bag system.
  • Liaise with the magazine teams to resolve page production issues.
  • Second check pages in InDesign to ensure that all necessary technical information is included and correct, fitting and editing on the page.

Writing:

  • Technical masterclasses - write the copy and produce/source swatches for photography, working collaboratively with the wider team to agree the content and structure of each feature.

Other:

  • Contribute to team meetings and discussions.

A bit about you

Essential Skills:

  • Experience using Adobe InDesign
  • Highly organised and deadline focused
  • Strong level of verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience of editing knitting patterns for technical accuracy

Desirable Skills:

  • Knowledge and experience of Adobe Illustrator, WordPress and Microsoft Excel
  • An interest in knitting, craft or knitwear design
  • An interest in researching new and unusual knitting techniques
  • Experience of grading knitting patterns to multiple sizes
  • Experience of creating vertical video
