Technical Lead - Data & Analytics

We’re looking for an experienced Tech Lead/Senior Data Engineering Lead to join a large Auckland organisation going through significant transformation across its Data & Analytics capability.

This is a senior technical leadership role for someone who enjoys being the person engineers turn to for guidance, while still staying close enough to the technology to understand the detail and make good technical decisions.

You’ll work across a modern data environment centred around Snowflake, dbt and Fivetran, alongside broader technologies including Databricks, Power BI and cloud services. There is also a significant programme of work underway to simplify legacy platforms, establish consistent modern data patterns and create reusable data assets across the organisation.

What you’ll be doing
You’ll provide technical leadership across the Data Engineering capability, working closely with a team of experienced engineers and wider architecture, analytics and business teams.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Setting technical direction, engineering standards and reusable data patterns
• Providing hands-on technical coaching and mentoring to Data Engineers
• Reviewing solution designs and helping engineers work through complex technical problems
• Supporting the migration and decommissioning of legacy data platforms
• Designing scalable data ingestion, transformation and analytics patterns
• Improving consistency across modelling, testing, CI/CD, documentation and data quality
• Helping shape the ongoing evolution of the Modern Data Platform
• Identifying opportunities for automation, AI and emerging technologies
• Working with technical and non-technical stakeholders to translate complex requirements into practical solutions

What we’re looking for:
You’ll bring strong modern Data Engineering experience and enough technical depth to confidently challenge designs and guide experienced engineers.

Ideally you’ll have:

• Strong hands-on experience with modern data platforms such as Snowflake or Databricks
• Experience with technologies such as dbt, Fivetran, Python, SQL and cloud data services
• Strong understanding of ETL/ELT, data pipelines and dimensional/relational data modelling
• Experience establishing engineering standards, patterns and development practices
• Exposure to CI/CD, testing, automation and modern software engineering practices within data
• Experience modernising or migrating legacy data environments
• Previous technical leadership, mentoring or coaching experience
• The ability to communicate technical decisions clearly to both engineers and wider stakeholders

You don’t necessarily need to already hold a formal Tech Lead title. We’re equally interested in Principal Data Engineers who are already the technical go-to within their team, are mentoring others and are ready to take greater ownership of technical direction.
