Technical Lead – QA / Test Automation

e&e is seeking a hands-on Technical Lead – QA / Test Automation to support a growing test automation initiative in the Harrisburg, PA area.

This role will serve as the technical lead for the automation strategy, framework, and implementation as the organization expands from primarily manual testing into a more automated, AI-assisted testing environment. The ideal candidate will have deep hands-on experience with Playwright and TypeScript , including designing and extending automation frameworks—not simply writing automated test scripts.

This position will also provide technical direction to a distributed automation team, establish development and testing standards, conduct code reviews, and help guide the organization through the assessment, pilot, and broader rollout of its automation strategy.

Responsibilities

• Serve as the technical owner for the organization's test automation strategy and framework.
• Design, enhance, and maintain automation frameworks using Playwright and TypeScript .
• Integrate automated testing into CI/CD pipelines, preferably within GitLab .
• Provide technical leadership and guidance to distributed/offshore automation engineers.
• Conduct code reviews and establish automation development standards and best practices.
• Lead automation initiatives from initial assessment and pilot through evaluation and scaled implementation.
• Support the adoption of AI-assisted testing capabilities, including test generation and self-healing automation, while maintaining appropriate human review.
• Help establish the approach for mobile application automation using tools such as Appium .
• Partner with internal engineering and QA teams to transfer knowledge and establish sustainable automation practices.
• Support automated testing across web and mobile applications with frequent release cycles.
• Participate onsite in Harrisburg as needed.

Required Qualifications

• Strong hands-on experience with Playwright and TypeScript , including automation framework architecture, design, and development.
• Demonstrated experience building, extending, or owning enterprise test automation frameworks.
• Experience integrating automated testing into CI/CD pipelines ; GitLab experience is strongly preferred.
• Previous experience serving as a QA Automation Lead, Technical Lead, or similar role.
• Experience providing technical leadership, code reviews, and development standards for automation engineers.
• Experience working with or leading offshore/distributed technical teams.
• Strong understanding of software testing methodologies, automation best practices, and modern SDLC processes.
• Ability to work onsite in Harrisburg, PA as needed.
• Must be U.S.-based and able to obtain required Pennsylvania background clearances.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with AI-assisted software testing, including tools or technologies such as Claude, Copilot, AI-generated test cases, or self-healing automation.
• Experience with Appium or other mobile automation frameworks for iOS and Android.
• Experience with Jira and/or QMetry.
• Knowledge of accessibility testing standards, including WCAG 2.1 AA and Section 508.
• Experience supporting education, EdTech, or other environments involving regulated or sensitive data.
• Familiarity with FERPA and/or HIPAA requirements.
• ISTQB certification or related testing credentials.
