What they need

Technical Manager in the Department of Materials and Energy (Ref.: 537251) (to commence as soon as possible, on a two-year fixed-term basis with contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 10% of basic salary, with the possibility of renewal subject to satisfactory performance).

We are looking for a highly motivated individual to support the newly established Department of Materials and Energy, under the Faculty of Engineering, as a University initiative to foster dynamic and cross‑disciplinary activities. The overarching aim of the Department is to foster closed-loop interdisciplinary collaboration in materials science and engineering, with a strategic emphasis on energy materials and energy engineering.

Applicants should possess a Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science and Engineering, Chemistry or a related discipline; a Master’s degree is highly desirable. A minimum of 10 years’ relevant experience is required, preferably including at least 3 years of experience in staff supervision and laboratory management. They must demonstrate strong proficiency in written and spoken English and Chinese (including Mandarin), together with excellent communication, organizational, problem-solving and laboratory management skills. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, responsible and able to work effectively as part of a team. Knowledge of laboratory safety regulations and procedures, as well as experience working in a tertiary education institution, would be a definite advantage.

The appointee will lead the Technical Team in delivering high-quality technical support for the Department’s administrative, teaching and learning, and research activities.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Managing and optimizing laboratory facilities, equipment and related infrastructure;
  • Planning and monitoring the technical budget and resource allocation;
  • Overseeing procurement and inventory of equipment, instruments and consumables;
  • Developing, implementing and reviewing standard operating procedures (SOPs);
  • Ensuring a safe working environment and monitoring compliance with laboratory safety regulations;
  • Providing training and technical support to staff, students and other users;
  • Managing documentation and preparing technical, safety and operational reports;
  • Providing technical support for the department office’s daily operations;
  • Supporting departmental events, seminars and outreach activities; and
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

 The appointee will also be responsible for planning and executing works projects to meet the evolving needs of the Department. This includes:

  • Formulating procurement strategies and managing tendering processes (e.g. setting evaluation criteria, vendor selection, timelines and documentation);
  • Coordinating with internal units such as the Estates Office and the Faculty of Engineering; and
  • Liaising with external contractors on site to ensure smooth, safe and timely project execution.

The University only accepts online application for the above post.  Applicants should apply online at the University’s career site (https://jobs.hku.hk) and upload an up-to-date C.V.  Review of applications will commence as soon as possible and continue until September 30, 2026, or until the post is filled, whichever is earlier.
