Job Description

Are you the producer who can take a creative concept, turn it into a detailed Vectorworks plan, and lead the technical team that brings it to life?

Simple Science is looking for a Technical Producer, AV Production to lead the technical planning and execution of corporate events, live experiences, and broadcast productions.

You’ll translate creative direction and client objectives into practical production plans. You’ll develop Vectorworks drawings, specify equipment with department leads, coordinate vendors and crews, and ensure every technical element is planned, documented, and ready for execution.

This role requires strong working knowledge of audio, video, lighting, LED, projection, staging, playback, and broadcast systems. You should understand how these systems work together, recognize gaps in a proposed setup, and communicate clear requirements to the people responsible for delivering it.

Vectorworks proficiency is essential. You’ll use it regularly to develop accurate layouts, communicate production requirements, and coordinate stage, screen, scenic, lighting, and audience placement within venue constraints.

Working closely with the Head of Production and project producers, you’ll own the technical scope of assigned projects from initial planning through load-in, rehearsals, show execution, and strike.

This position is based out of our Costa Mesa office and supports projects domestically and internationally. Our team designs and delivers exceptional live experiences, broadcast productions, and branded content for world-class clients.

WHAT YOU’LL OWN

Technical Production Planning

Translate creative concepts into coordinated technical plans. Define equipment, staffing, infrastructure, and scheduling requirements with department leads. Ensure audio, video, lighting, staging, scenic, and broadcast systems support the intended experience.

Vectorworks Drawings & Documentation

Create and maintain production drawings in Vectorworks, including floor plans, stage layouts, screen placement, lighting positions, scenic elements, and relevant dimensions and elevations. Maintain organized layers, classes, viewports, and sheet sets so drawings are clear and usable by vendors, crews, and venue teams.

AV Systems & Equipment

Develop and review equipment specifications with technical specialists. Evaluate LED and projection configurations, presentation and playback systems, audio coverage, lighting requirements, communications, and show control. Confirm compatibility and identify missing components before equipment is ordered.

Venue & Site Coordination

Conduct site surveys and verify room dimensions, ceiling heights, access routes, loading conditions, and infrastructure. Coordinate power, rigging, internet, and venue labor requirements with qualified specialists. Keep production plans aligned with confirmed site conditions.

On-Site Execution

Lead technical coordination during load-in, setup, testing, rehearsals, show execution, and strike. Verify that installations match approved plans and resolve field changes with the appropriate department leads. Keep producers informed of technical readiness, issues, and decisions.

Risk, Testing & Contingency Planning

Identify technical risks early and develop practical contingency plans. Coordinate system checks, playback tests, connectivity verification, and backup procedures with operators and department leads. Ensure critical systems are tested before the show.

Standards & Continuous Improvement

Maintain accurate technical documentation and organized drawing files. Contribute to reusable Vectorworks resources, equipment libraries, templates, and production checklists. Capture lessons from each event and apply them to future projects.

YOUR FIRST 90 DAYS

First 30 Days: Learn the Systems

Meet the team, key vendors, and technical partners. Review active projects, existing Vectorworks files, equipment standards, and production workflows. Attend planning meetings and site visits to understand how we develop and deliver shows.

Days 30–60: Build the Plans

Take ownership of technical planning for assigned projects. Produce coordinated Vectorworks drawings, review equipment proposals, and lead technical discussions with vendors and department heads. Identify and resolve gaps before on-site execution.

Days 60–90: Own the Execution

Lead the technical scope of assigned productions from planning through delivery. Demonstrate accurate documentation, confident crew coordination, practical problem solving, and reliable execution on-site.
