What they need
Technical Project Manager | Server Lifecycle and Vendor Operations | San Jose, CA
Our client runs a very large server fleet, and the programs that keep it healthy are spread across hardware vendors, software teams and data center operations.
You would own how the client works with its server manufacturers and repair providers, the software that runs the server lifecycle, and the projects that retire, move and reuse hardware.
This is a Project Management role first. You will not build the systems or fix the servers. You will own the plan, the metrics and the outcome, and you will be the person who gets vendors and engineering teams to deliver when ownership is unclear or priorities conflict.
Project Manager Responsibilities:
- Agree service levels and escalation paths with hardware manufacturers and repair partners, and hold them to those commitments in regular reviews
- Lead the root cause fix when the same fault keeps coming back, and step in firmly when repairs stall
- Plan spares and repair capacity ahead of demand, including readiness for new server models and dense GPU systems
- Own the delivery plan for the tools behind server install, firmware, testing, monitoring, repairs, retirement and secure data wiping
- Turn operational pain points into scoped projects with clear milestones, and keep engineers aligned on priorities and dependencies
- Choose the measures that prove the work helped, and help shape how AI-assisted tools enter daily operations
- Plan and run data center closures, server migrations, new site openings and hardware reuse, including relocation and data erasure across regions
- Take charge of urgent infrastructure efforts that have lost momentum
What we are looking for
- Technical project management, infrastructure operations, hardware engineering, data center operations or enterprise software delivery
- A track record of leading complex, cross-functional technical programs, not only contributing to them
- Strong vendor and stakeholder management
- The ability to build structured plans with clear milestones, dependencies, ownership and success metrics
- A working understanding of infrastructure and engineering trade-offs, enough to ask sharp questions and challenge assumptions, without needing to build the systems
- Experience running several programs at once in a fast-paced, globally distributed environment
- Comfort driving accountability and progress when ownership is unclear or priorities conflict
- Clear communication with technical and non-technical audiences
Who this is not for
If your experience is coordinating or tracking work that others own, or running vendor operations without owning the plan, this role will not be the right fit.
The same applies to program managers whose background is software products, construction or network deployment only, with no exposure to servers, hardware or data center operations.
