What they need

THE ROLE

Union Tractor is looking for an experienced Undercarriage Specialist to join our team. This is a hands-on, customer-facing role for someone who understands tracked equipment, knows how to assess undercarriage wear and can turn field information into practical recommendations for the customer.

The position will spend a significant amount of time at customer sites inspecting equipment, measuring wear, tracking component performance and helping customers plan maintenance before it becomes an unexpected problem. The specialist will also work closely with Union Tractor Sales, Product Management and Supply Chain to help make sure we understand what customers need and when they will need it.

We are looking for someone with at least five years of relevant heavy-equipment experience. Mining experience is preferred, particularly experience around large crawler tractors, dozers, excavators or other tracked equipment working in demanding applications.

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING

  • Inspect crawler and excavator undercarriage systems at customer sites and accurately measure component wear.
  • Assess track chains/groups, links, pins and bushings, rollers, carrier rollers, idlers, sprockets/segments, track shoes and related undercarriage components.
  • Track wear over time and estimate remaining component life and expected replacement hours.
  • Identify unusual or accelerated wear and help determine likely causes such as track tension, alignment, packing, ground conditions, travel, turning, machine application and operating practices.
  • Give customers practical recommendations that can improve component life and reduce cost per operating hour.
  • Help customers plan undercarriage replacement around scheduled maintenance rather than waiting for a failure.
  • Complete clear inspection reports with measurements, wear percentages, photos, observations and recommended next steps.
  • Maintain machine history so component performance can be followed through its full service life.
  • Support customer fleet reviews and discuss upcoming requirements with maintenance, reliability and planning teams.
  • Support Union Tractor salespeople with technical knowledge during customer visits, product discussions and undercarriage evaluations.
  • Record installation hours, machine hours, measurements, operating conditions and final component life.
  • Compare actual performance with expected life, previous components and customer benchmarks.
  • Help calculate component and total undercarriage cost per hour / SMU.
  • Assist with warranty or product concerns by gathering accurate measurements, photos and application information.
  • Provide field feedback to Union Tractor Product Management and ITR/USCO when product or application issues are identified.

EXPERIENCE WE'RE LOOKING FOR

  • Minimum 5 years of relevant experience in heavy equipment, undercarriage, field service, product support, equipment maintenance or a similar role.
  • Hands-on knowledge of crawler and/or excavator undercarriage systems.
  • Strong mechanical understanding of tracked equipment and undercarriage wear.
  • Comfortable using undercarriage measurement tools and interpreting wear limits and technical information.
  • Able to recognize abnormal wear and explain what may be causing it.
  • Comfortable working independently in the field and around active heavy equipment.
  • Able to communicate well with technicians, planners, maintenance teams, purchasing groups and customer management.
  • Able to prepare clear inspection reports and work with digital reporting tools.
  • Valid driver's licence and ability to travel to customer locations.
  • Heavy Equipment Technician ticket an asset but not required

WORKING AT CUSTOMER SITES

This is a field-based position with regular travel to customer locations, including construction, forestry and mining sites. The role involves working outdoors, around large mobile equipment and in changing weather conditions. Early starts, longer days and occasional overnight travel may be required depending on customer needs.

Safety comes first. All work must follow Union Tractor requirements as well as the policies and procedures of the customer site.
