What they need

At Howells, we combine a fresh and forward-thinking approach with a client-focused, local feel to deliver a range of award-winning, quality services. This is an exciting position, playing a key role in developing and supporting quality systems that make a difference to the organisation. If you don't meet every requirement but genuinely believe this is the role for you, we'd still love to hear from you. Enthusiasm, commitment and a willingness to learn are just as important to us as technical skills.

We’re looking for a motivated individual to maintain and build high-quality software solutions, develop new systems, integrate with existing platforms, and support internal IT users. From concept and coding to troubleshooting and system improvement, you’ll play a key role in driving innovation across the business.

We welcome applications from everyone. Whether you're leaving education, changing careers, returning to work, or have many years of experience. If you are enthusiastic, curious and enjoy finding solutions, we would love to hear from you. This is a full-time, office-based role in Cardiff. You'll be working alongside experienced developers who will support your development, but you will also be given real responsibility and the opportunity to make a genuine impact.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a growing, well-established organisation, work on meaningful projects, and develop your skills within a supportive, experienced team.

What you'll be responsible for:

  • Design, develop, configure, and customise systems (including our CMS) to meet evolving business needs.
  • Build and maintain workflows, forms, reports, APIs, scripts, and integrations
  • Write clean, efficient, maintainable code and contribute innovative solutions to development projects.
  • Gather requirements, attend project meetings, and translate business needs into technical solutions.
  • Test, deploy, document, and support system changes, enhancements, and upgrades.
  • Conduct code reviews, testing, and quality assurance to ensure system stability, performance, and security.
  • Collaborate with internal teams (IT, operations, business users) on system improvements and initiatives.
  • Liaise with third-party vendors for complex configurations, integrations, and custom development.
  • Provide technical support and helpdesk assistance for software, systems, and related issues when required.
  • Diagnose, resolve, and escalate system incidents efficiently, including urgent or business-critical issues.
  • Maintain accurate system, configuration, and change documentation for future support and maintenance.
  • Prepare reports on system performance, usage, and support metrics.
  • Assist with system migrations, integrations, and upgrades, ensuring minimal disruption to the business
  • Maintain strict confidentiality and support ad-hoc duties as required by management.

What we’re looking for:

  • Full UK Driver license and access to a car for travelling to and working at other sites throughout the week.
  • Willingness to learn CMS, SQL Server, Python, HTML, JavaScript and CSS and Python Flask
  • Bachelor’s Degree in an IT or Computer Science (or equivalent experience).
  • Experience with providing first and second line support is preferable.
  • A technical understanding of Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Office and Office 365.
  • Willingness to work with, diagnose problems with and install various software packages.
  • Practical experience of a relevant programming language and relational databases.
  • Strong debugging and troubleshooting skills.
  • Good organisational, problem-solving and analytical and technical skills
  • Confident in handling queries, request and calls from all colleagues.
  • Self-motivated, proactive and hard working.
  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal at all levels.
  • Excellent general IT skills, with the ability to quickly learn and adapt to new systems.
  • Strong knowledge of database management and system administration.
  • Familiarity with system integrations (APIs, web services) and third-party tool integrations.
  • Understanding of IT security and data protection principles.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Detail-oriented with a focus on delivering high-quality work.
  • Team player.

What you'll receive:

  • Competitive Salary
  • Annual Leave: Enjoy a minimum of 23 days each holiday year, plus bank holidays and extra time off to unwind, including an additional personal day, a day off for your birthday, and a discretionary paid day during the Christmas break.
  • Annual Leave Purchase Scheme: Option to buy up to 3 extra days of leave annually to support your work-life balance.
  • Gym Discounts: Access discounted memberships to help you stay active and healthy.
  • Growth & Development: We’re invested in your career with opportunities for learning and advancement.
  • Milestone Recognition: Celebrate your dedication with recognition and awards for key milestones.
  • Events: Take part in various networking, corporate, and charity events throughout the year.
  • Refer a Friend Scheme: Get rewarded for referring talented friends and connections to join the team

Successful candidates will be subject to a basic or enhanced DBS disclosure dependent on the role. Permanent employment is conditional on having a satisfactory DBS check. You will therefore be asked to disclose any unspent convictions during the recruitment process.
