What they need

Power your future with Qualus as a Technical Trainer in our Design Engineering department! The Technical Trainer delivers end-to-end training consultation tailored to both internal Qualus employees and external client needs. This role leads technical training programs, delivers training sessions, and provides subject-matter direction to instructional designers and learning scientists.

This position may be based out of one of our Engineering office locations including Lake Mary, FL, Raleigh, NC, Birmingham, AL or Reno, NV

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate on training initiatives—set scope, success metrics, and milestones; maintain alignment to safety, quality, and operational goals.
  • Collaborate with other design engineering SMEs and instructional developers to translate design workflows and job tasks into learning objectives, scenarios, labs, and assessments; review/approve storyboards and modules for technical accuracy and practicality.
  • Act as the technical SME for substation design engineering topics (protection and control, physical layout, documentation, QA/QC).
  • Serve as the technical administrator of QualU’s Engineering Boot Camp training program, which includes Protection & Control, Physical substation, Settings, Transmission line, and Distribution Engineering tracts.
  • Consult with stakeholders (Operations, Engineering, Safety, PM/CM) to identify gaps, prioritize curricula, and define career progression pathways (competency models, proficiency rubrics, evaluator guides).
  • Assist with change-management oriented training tied to new tools/processes, plan adoption and reinforcement strategies.
  • Use data & analytics (skills assessments, completion and pass rates, design quality/rework) to evaluate impact and recommend enhancements.
  • Facilitate selective delivery: host both internal and client training seminars; coach mentors; support train-the-trainer where needed.
  • Coordinate logistics with the Training Ops team to ensure smooth execution of training sessions.
  • Serve as a client-facing representative for scoping, SOW inputs, and stakeholder updates—clearly communicating status, risks, and results.
  • Champion and embed human performance principles throughout programs.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering.
  • 5+ years in protection and controls and/or physical substation design engineering and 1–2+ years mentoring/coaching or leading technical training initiatives.
  • EIT required, PE preferred.
  • A familiarity with other facets of utility design engineering, such as power studies, settings file creation, transmission line design, and/or distribution design.
  • Strong grasp of electrical theory, protection & control fundamentals, industry standards (NEC, NESC, IEEE); comfort reviewing electrical drawings, relay/IED settings, and different client design standards at a practical level.
  • Working knowledge of substation design workflows.
  • Experience delivering in-person and/or virtual training sessions.
  • Excellent facilitation, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Travel up to 25% as needed.
